There is a fair bit of (mostly accidental) TKing on 64 players now, it's mostly the a symptom of not checking your map enough (I'm guilty as sin when I'm gunning). In time I feel this change may well end up reducing the amount of TKs as people will get into the habit of checking the map for friendly positions.

I don't see this making administration any more difficult, it would still read out the team killers names at the top of the screen, and you could still click on the dot and find the name in the map screen.(if they require you to join squads)

They are useful on the 64 player servers but remove some realism and stop people looking at their maps properly.

On 128 and greater servers the name tags are an irritation as they often don't work on some players.

There may be some performance boost to server and client side too?
Agree with that idea.
Name tags should be removed(as it was,if I am not wrong, in earliest versions(0.3-0.5)
Only no tags.Only hardcore. 8-)

Admining is not an issue. YOu see the teamkill message. If you see the griefer doing ye old BF2 tactics of driving a car, then jumping out, so car drives over people without TK message, just TK him when he gets out. You see his name, ban is in place.

Right until a griefer attempts to justify TK's by accusing the other dude of griefing.

Player base is low enough with all the jackasses not giving a shit about TKs. Making it even easier to TK wont rectify this.

Hey guys,

Posted this in another thread but probably is more appropriate here.

I have an idea that will solve the problem of identifying friend/foe if the enemy can pick up friendly kits with friendly kit geometry, and if name tags are removed. In World War II, during Operation Overlord, Allied paratroopers would use CLICKERS to identify each other after being dropped into enemy territory at night. If you've seen the movie The Longest Day, you'll know what I'm talking about. The concept is simple, one person would issue a CHALLENGE sound (say 1 click) and the other person would have to RESPOND correctly (say 2 clicks).

Airborne Cricket - 101st Airborne Clicker - WWII Paratrooper Cricket

Utilizing this concept, we can implement the same idea with PR with the use of the Command Rose. The only requirement is that the player must have ALL ENGLISH VOICEOVERs turned off, so that other languages can be heard. A new CHALLENGE/RESPONSE option would be recorded for the Com-Rose. The words used must sound distinctive, loud and clear, so that it would be easy to identify in game. Of course this idea is for short range only, but it is where it really matters. For long range, there's always time to check the map.

Really it could be as simple as Challenge-"IDENTIFY YOURSELF!", and a Response- "American." Or in code, Challenge- "Eagle", response "Blue." Something like that. Right now we have a CHECK FIRE command but that is team-wide. In order to reduce radio traffic, this CHALLENGE/RESPONSE command would only be local like saying "GO GO GO."

Summary:
-In 64+ servers there are no name tags, and people picking up enemy kit geometry, this is a problem for IFF
-Create "CHALLENGE + RESPONSE" sounds in COM-ROSE (could be any distinctive phrase or even sound specific to different factions)
-If not sure person wearing friendly kit with no tag is friend/foe, press CHALLENGE, and if he doesn't respond or responds in another language or faction's response, shoot him.

The issue with that is giving away your position, I personally would never ever use the challenge/response system if I have an unknown soldier in front of me. There is a reason people flip out when someone uses comma-rose.....the enemy now knows exactly where you are and if they don't have all english v-os they now know which team you are on.

Thinking about it more I really like KiloJules idea but one could go further and remove other green dots and just have your own squad on the map....probably just a dream though as it would require maturity and communication.
I'm surprised at people complaining about team killing in the game (other than intentional), are you people really shooting anything that moves without looking at your map and being aware of where comrades are? Shame on you :)
We all tk once in a while but considering the amount of fighting one is involved in not that often. Shit happens, wrong time wrong place wrong video game. Some people here think its rubbish and some think its great. Theories need to be tested.
So
can you do any of this stuff with server side switches or does it require actually frobbing around with code to achieve anything killojule mentioned?
