Good to see people having a practice before the real thing :D

I find there are stages to trans chopper skills

1) Be able to fly around and land without killing yourself or passengers, with the understanding that the chopper is your responsibility.

2) achieve skill 1) and plan flightpaths with due diligence to enemy threats (in consultation with passengers if possible, however the final decision is still yours as the helo is your responsibility e.g. infantry walking an extra 200m is better than dead passengers + chopper)

3) achieve skills 1) and 2) be able to intelligently change flightpaths and dropzones in response to direct attack or new intel in-flight

4) achieve skills 1), 2) and 3) and coordinate a combined arms effort in order to facilitate your other skills i.e. utilising CAS escort, cover fire from the ground and deliberate neutralisation of enemy positions (e.g. AA positions).

The best pilots have all four points in their play style imo, though acceptable pilots can have less.

Just remember no means no

NO I won't drop your squad next to the enemy tank/HAT/BMP/AA

NO Mr.l33tsaucesnipz0r111 I am not your personal taxi for some stupid drop on an exposed hill

NO I'm not going to do a barrel roll

NO I'm not coming to get your squad until you are all ready to get quickly picked up

You get my point. Also as far as offline practising of stuff goes, load up the maps locally (have debug on to reduce spawn times and spawn vehicles) and try the crazy stuff that you would never really dream of doing in a live server. And if during a game someone asked you to go somewhere and something went wrong then during your next practice session try and recreate the movement or flightpath you chose or look at alternatives.

Man how this makes me want to get back online and fly peeps around.

Those two post above mine sum up everything nicely.

And AnimalMother, btw, it has always been a pleasure getting picked up by your transport heli, as it's usually a fun and relaxing ride (go online!).

DO IT! I haven't seen you or Aimed in ages, having to make do with sub-par pilots :)

Personally, I'd learn the Huey first since it's widely regarded as the easiest. I'd leave the lynx till last, as that things quick, but seems to want to flip at the slightest incline.

Another tip is, you don't always have to "Land", you can hover a good 5-10m in the air and drop a crate without physically having the touch the ground, or hover about 0.5-1m off the ground for infantry to hop out and you don't have the land on some slope that'd rival everest for harshness.
