This looks like the work of the real pro so far.
Hope this Bren will see more action besides Falklands in PR,
but since there is no Indian Army I hope it can bee used
by ARF insurgents as a alternate SAW.

^Well, it's not exactly a cylinder; it does have some geometry to it that gives the end of the flash suppressor some port holes. But this is a good idea, seeing as how the 1p view might not exactly see very much of this inner geom. I can try to experiment with this, and see where it goes.

^Hey thanks! But I know it's not, and I kinda had the feeling there was a "better" that I could do. As for being used by other factions, the L4A4 was also used by Australian forces. But IDK what kind of IRL warfare the Australians were ever involved in, so what are the chances we'd ever see an Australian PR faction? Also, India? Same goes for that faction too. I think I read somewhere that it also saw service during the Korean war, and also the Cambodians used it at one time. But... Korea? Cambodia?

Ok, so I have reworked this...

Before:
4072 Polys
7677 Tris
8177 Edges
4070 Verts

After:
3697 Polys -375 difference
6742 Tris -935
7559 Edges -618
3826 Verts -244

Changelog:
-Reworked model as-per all suggestions of Rhino and Adriaan.
-Additionally found other areas to optimize/rework.
-shading groups DONE.
-eliminated all instances of n^gons where n≥5; all geometry is now in triangles and polygons.
-Attempted coning inside of flash suppressor as-per lucky.BOY, but best I could do was to collapse down inner geom/polys; just didn't look right with any type of coning going on there.

I think I'm about ready to work on the bipod stand next... If any [R-Devs] want to check out the progress so far just shoot me a PM and I'll link up the .max

That is looking MUCH better, huge improvement(s) since your last screen shots. Good work!

Still a few more little areas you could chip some triangles off but that really is a big transformation in quality.

Yeah, there's a few areas that could probably still use some work yet.

Here are the wars the Bren was used in:
World War II
Malayan Emergency
Korean War
Chinese Civil War
Suez Crisis
Congo Crisis
Rhodesian Bush War
The Troubles
Falklands War

The only problem with using this version of the Bren is that first off, it wasn't made until well after 1945... The version used in WWII was the L4A1, L4A2, and the L4A3. Here's a picture, I think this is the L4A1
Image

Also, the L4A4 never occurred until "A conversion of the Bren to 7.62mm NATO from 1958" (source)

Additionally, something interesting here, but the WWII versions were also used by the RAF as anti-aircraft

How much of a trouble would it be to model a WWII version as well as this one? Having the asset could pay off in the long run, i suppose.

Not too hard I would think... The differences are very small; no flash suppressor, different foresight (drum instead of leaf), non-foldable cocking handle, bananna box magazine instead of the 12 degree box magazine. Different carrying handle. Really, after I get a bipod going, that would probably be a good time to duplicate the .max file and set it aside for later, just in case. There really isn't much difference in the bipod. A little, but not much. That would be a good starting point for doing the conversion back to L4A1/2/3. because it's before skinning, geom's, LOD's, etc. Good idea!

Ye, looking good so far like Tim said :)

As for a WW2 version, I wouldn't worry about that now tbh as PR:N have a long way to go before they can even really consider adding a British faction and then if it dose get decided to be made, at that point the tweaks can be pretty easily made providing the .max scene is lost, which with our policy of storing them all on our assets repo that doesn't happen anymore :p

Hopefully more will be following as I've asked on another forum I frequent for any references.

^Bahaha! IKR, that was my first thought when I saw that... Doesn't look very combat-effective... But then again, when centered in on an incoming bogey, you only have x amount of time to fire@it... This was also back in the days of prop driven attack aircraft.

^Cool... I suppose if it's something that is needed further down the road, grabbing the .max off this asset repository like you said would probably not be too hard. That's a great idea!

^Cool. One thing that I'm finding hard to find is references for the bipod. All of the pictures of the BREN that I've seen really don't give good views of the bipod. Thus I'm having a hard time figuring out what it should look like. IDK what forum you're conversing on, but maybe if you could ask about pictures of the bipod. The more the better! This remains one of the most vague aspects of the weapon system, and because of this, I'm having a hard time figuring out what it should look like.

This is what I have so far:
Found this link:
MKII Bren forum discussion

Also scoured the interwebz and found these pictures (I archived them; .rar format; DL here):
Refs bipod non-L4A4
But these are not L4A4 refs... The L4A4 is an elusive gun to find good pictures of. For a more favorite of a gun, it sure is harder to find pictures for this gun than the L4A1-3.

There's not a lot to the bipod itself, just made from steel tube with a hinge!!! I'll see what I can get.

Given, this is an MKIII bipod! It would be nice to see better pictures of the MKIV or the A4. I think I read somewhere that the L4A4 is an MKIII conversion (?). That'd be nice.

A lot of the Mk4's were MK3 conversions so you can't really go wrong. I've found another couple of references for you.

Bipod head:

Some old manuals, for the .303 version however they have some references that could come in handy for you:

I think your putting in a few too many tris into your bipod. Remember its quite far away from the player, unlike the front iron sight and as such, doesn't need anything like as much detail as that. Other than that looks good to me :)

Also I believe the Bipod between the M3 and M4 are quite different, M4 is meant to be a lighter one etc, although dunno the details.
