There are a lot more 'niche' players now than I have ever seen in PR. They generally will stick with one role or kit and say well I'm doing my part. I'm doing this thing and look your not doing that thing. That leads to a dysfunctional team. It's tempting..
"The automatic rifle just flat out turns me on.. but look the mortar team only has a couple guys trying to hold down defenses on the flag.. hmmm"
I've played long enough to notice that squads and players that where flexible, fill in where they were needed the team does well. What my mate from New Zealand calls "thinking out of the box". We just don't see it a lot and when you do it's quite remarkable and has a positive effect on the team.

I glad on your behalf Wicca, knowing that you also commanded teams before. In regard to your Mr. Words of Wisdom

that I 1) don't need to be full on force competitive, and 2) I still can win without having to burn my self out, well, I cannot thank you enough. You should be a teacher I think, you have that thing making people wanting to listen to you.

In most situations yes, however, in your case Wicca, I'm afraid she told you so, to make you a even more happy partner, than you already are.
Please accept my apology.
All the best
Mike

Competitive has different connotations. I meant to say the extreme opposite of someone who is purely a casual player in PR (#5) and not very interested in the outcome (win/lose) of the game. Where as a "committed" player is. Hope that clarifies.
I would say to you Wicca that being 'competitive' is not a bad thing either. Some players just have that level of drive that others don't and have just as much fun.
I play competitive and have never experienced any burn out. Frustrated yes, burn out no. More please.
Being competitive in a game like PR is a highly positive thing. There is absolutely nothing bad about it. The more of the 1s the PR community receive, the better the chance of creating great gaming. The better the chance of pushing the game to its next level.

Indeed, getting some of you to put up with non clan members in our squads is like pulling teeth sometimes!
I am very competitive but only at the squad level. I am not a happy camper when my squad is not pulling a good kd or is not working at their full level. In recent years I've learned that in most cases I can have little faith in the team as a whole completing objectives, so I usually do not go out of my way to try to coordinate with other squads, as in most cases it is an uphill battle that ultimately doesn't lead to a higher level of effectiveness unfortunately(the exception being working with cas since they usually do want to help because of the free kills). Hopefully my pessimism will be changed with the TG server revival though!

1, always 1. I play to win which these days means I play Defensive Inf SL or logi squad 70% of the time.
I mark stuff on the map, relay important intel over SL comms and request information from other SLs, which a lot of the time goes unanswered. I often feel the need to yell at people for being way the fuck out of position and making no discernible attempt to correct the situation, but most of the time I manage a polite-ish "Could you come and help over here instead". Most of the time

I only play this game to have fun. "fun" can come in different ways. It could come in high kd\s, a drunk squad mate, something happens which makes us laugh. It really does not matter to me if I have a high KD or not.
Almost all of the time I play with no expectations whatsoever. I do not expect the other squads to do anything, unless they have competent squad leaders that I know. I am not elitist, I play with everyone as long as you show that you are a competent member of the squad.
Competent however does not mean you are 1337 baddass at every kit or position. Competent is someone who if he does not know about something, he asks.

I take breaks too as opposed to playing 4-5 hours at a time in the past. Less friends playing PR and work priorities.
I expect this poll to eventually average #3 based on what I see in the servers.
Vote please.

1,2 and 3 ... really depends on the mood and the people on the server you are playing with.

3.
Sometimes you just have to plough around a root, and everyone has different intentions from playing (it's only a game).. No point trying to keep milsim types and people looking for casual fun happy.. Just sit in the middle and do what fits and is fun at the time.

You guys highlight my progression through the PR scale (and I think you both explained well the two ends of the PR player spectrum - No morality judgement attached to either btw).
I started off with your attitude Cole (I know you have been playing longer than me, btw), and being a perfectionist got let down too much (because I expected too much), and now I have Kwalc's philosophy.
Not saying there is right or wrong. It's remarkable that we all find a way to co-exist to be honest, given the diverse opinions and ways people play. I think that a 32 player team is just inefficient enough to allow ignorance of the deliberate actions of other SL's/team-members to be honest and that is PR's saving grace!

You can combine having fun and doing it for the win, the only problem is that many people don't know how to do it.

Play as a team, work as a team. Bring everyone home alive to their Mums.

The British Army allways try to bring their own back.

I'm a 2 because I'd rather win best squad than get the most kills or even win the match on any given day. I enjoy communicating, receiving and executing orders, issuing orders and having them followed, and above all else, experiencing effective and successful tactical maneuvers can truly be satisfying!
I'm not a 1 because I'm not hell bent on winning a match, and wouldn't be abrasive or rude to get things done.
I've learned that if you're having one bad game after another because your squad isn't communicating or the squad leader is only interested in being a sniper, it's better to create your own squad and gather a squad of like-minded people (and kick those who're not) and turn a bad day into a great one.
