Wheels on BH are really bad. This causes the chopper to roll at 20km/h forwards. Only way to prevent this is to park your choppers against some sort of wall, which seems to work since the chopper is not taking any damage.

Tried today in 1.0 I wasn't prepared and I disliked it. Please add brake.

I find the wheels a real pain now. They'd be alright, but it's the fact that when I'm sat idle on the deck, I have to hold my stick all the way back to stop the chopper from just rolling forward. The only chopper it works well on that I've tried so far is the Chinook - If the way they work on that heli could be replicated for all, it'd be a lot better. Overall though, I'd prefer to see the feature removed, or extremely toned down.

If your using a joystick, use your throttle to hold it in place by giving a slight negative or positive throttle to the chopper, depending on which one, and it will stop rolling.

A very (very very) few people fly choppers with a joystick. The great majority uses mouse and keyboard, so don't rely too much on joystick throttle.

I only had a chance to try this out in official 1.0 release (not beta). I have probably clocked around 50 hours running 0.98 trans, which isn't huge, but probably way more than most. I tried out the new 1.0 behavior on coop and then in standard multiplayer for about 3 hours. Here is my feedback on the 1.0 wheel behavior:
  • When parked on flat ground, it does provide more maneuverability (like jet taxi), though the zero-point on mouse+keyboard seemed to push it forward much more quickly than before. I have to constantly correct to keep it in one spot.
  • When landing on flat ground, I don't find the wheels particularly useful. I was able to use the standard ground friction in 0.98 to do rolling landings just as well, and with a shorter stopping distance (why would you even want a long one?).
  • When landing on uneven ground, wheels are detrimental, and the game physics actually seem unstable in some cases. I was playing on Silent Eagle and landed at the base of a mountain just slightly uphill. If anything, I would have expected wheels to cause me to slide backwards down the hill. Instead, by moving my mouse down to pitch forward and stay level, I ended up accelerating very rapidly up the hill, at a faster rate even than it seems is the max speed of the vehicle.

+1 for the no-joystick crowd.

i typed up some long scenario that just happened, but it's redundant. i dislike the wheels in 1.0

neat concept. adds little to the game but a taxi mechanic and complicates already complex landings. hate that the taxi is tied directly to mouse pitch. hate that the taxi engine is always on.

breaks, i think, are more than a luxury to add to this feature. i think that breaks are necessary. and if breaks were available, i would make that extra step to have them always-on, whatever that took. and that defeats the taxi mechanic entirely.

i don't think this should be in game, it takes away more than it adds game play wise.

like the post above said, if brakes were implemented i would have them always on. and that's just one more thing that i have to deal with while flying a heli.

More than a luxury indeed. It brings nothing useful and makes it just more complicated, there was no problem with chopper landing before so what is the purpose of implementing this? It is some good work indeed Rhino, but not useful work at all :|

No. Now i can be bunker rider! :D Really, with wheels it a lot more easier to land or take off inside large buildings.

Btw, Blackhawk not rolling on helipads on some maps like ramiel, khshimiyan, but roll's heavily on qwai river. Also, NH90 not rolling on wanda shan on helipad.

Maybe dev's can check how it's done on this maps\helis?

I wouldn't call that a positive of this system myself :p

As for the helipads, most likley due to the Qwai one being slightly uneven or on a slope or something.

I've been observing pilots ingame and I don't see many having problems with it myself. Worst thing I saw was one pilot hopping out on the helipad to stop it while the crate loaded in a Mi-17.

These wheels makes life really hard, it was annoying before, when mi-8 and BH slowly kept moving on ground v0.98, but now it is unbearable when you have to always tap down button to manage to stay on helipad area for resupply.

It is pain in the bottom, when you trying not to kill someone by accidentally driving over, while waiting for assignments in base and at the same time trying to monitor the map to see who might need trans or supply. It is constant fight with the chopper: tap down button(to move backward a bit) - open map see whats going on - close map, tap down button - open map to see whats going on - close map tap down etc repeat infinitely; Also while you write in chat, chopper might cross huge distance by itself...

I like the feature, but it desperately needs brakes.

The "magical" brakes works for some helis(NH90, UH-60), so i'm pretty sure that soon dev's will try to find solution to Mi-8\17 too :)

Also, helipad not only one place on base where you can place your heli after reloading\repairing. Use barriers\walls if lazy like me :D

Adds nothing useful imo and is very annoying for pilots. Dislike!

As soon as the heli is ready to take off, the player remains locked in mortal kombat, wrestling the controls to prevent the heli from sliding away. Especially crappy when you have to do it on that cargo ship with a MI 17. There is 4m space in front and behind the heli.

Now try communicating with players who enter your heli or even checking teh map so you can plan the next flight. Not possible, especially if you do not use a mic.

Giving helis the "feature" to "taxi" was one of the worst ideas in v1.0

-Helis do nto need to taxi, EVER.
-Being able to safely land on the spot and actually do other things while landed was thrown out of the window for that sliding feature no heli pilot needs. Because a good pilot lands where he wants to precisely and does not need to slide around like a piece of soap, terrifying waiting sqsuads to the point that they are too scared to enter the heli.

And do not suggest to simply press forward and backward periodically because I am sure real helicopter pilots do not have to do that to keep a landed heli still, because the weight alone of a Mi17 would be enough to keep the thing in place unless you really wanted to slide.

Either fix that soapiness, or add brakes or the possibility to turn off the engine while still being inside, so you do not get the 30 second teamplay enhancing punishment every time you want to just land, read the map, and talk to other players before the flight.

And how did this even get past playtesting without adding proper brakes?

On the heli's to stay on the landing pad i have to be constantly driving into an object next to the pad

I just love it when I see the blackhawk rocking back and forth on the helipad in an effort to say in one place. It makes me smile. :D
