I have all the parts I need now for the Dutch Faction's new rifle. Just have to UV the remaining parts and make some LOD's out of it. Here are some 'color renders' that show the rilfe in it's current state:

PS. I will also make a mag pull and the barrel needs some more love

Color renders are nice but don't show us much :) Can we get some wireframes and UV layouts? What's your plan in terms of textures? Will some parts be on all versions and possible to combine textures etc,...

They are looking really nice, cannot wait until they receive a proper texture and are exported

Keep it up DJ!

Well, fist of all, I am basically a complete noob when it comes to UV-mapping. Also, I don't really know that much about texturing.

Right now I am just trying to make the UV maps as good as possible. I like to consider every single chunk on my UV map as a piece of 'UV Paper' that will be 'glued' on to the model later on when the textures are done. So therefore I try to make the pieces as practical as possible.

As you can see on the screenshot every single part of the rifle has a separate UV sheet. That is because all my rifle's parts are still unattached. When I am done UV mapping all the separate parts I will attach all the parts to each other and make one big UV map for the entire rifle.

I could however leave some parts unattached and therefore give them a separate UV sheet. For example, the C7A1's sand toned handguard extension so it wouldn't have to be loaded in when playing with the C8. Same goes for the mag pull I will model and also the Aimpoint + magnifier maybe?? Though I think it would be better to put the scopes on the rifle's UV sheet as well.

Also, I have a question about my UV maps. There are some parts I can not rotate since it causes stretching if I do so:

Also, the dimensions of the greater part of my UV Chunks are not proportional to the the dimensions of my rifle. For instance, a square part on my rifle will look rectangular on my UV sheet, sometimes even twice as width as high. I have the feeling this is due to the W-coordinate?

That depends on how fast it can be animated and textured since the model and the UV sheet are almost done. A few more hours of work and it is ready for texturing.

Wow, that was fast. Awesome!

Looking pretty Nice, do you plan on adding those openfolded lenscovers? They should Be on the SRIM.

It's mainly aiming animations right? Surely new reload isn't necessary?

You can only reuse the animations if the weapon is the same size and exported the same way. Otherwise -> new anims.

So hopefully that's possible ;) .

well they were based on the original files and the size hasnt increased so hopefully that wont be a problem

Biggest issue could be the version with AG36, but should also work. Adjusting zoom animations is rather easy.

I figured we could maybe use the M4 / M16A4 animations since those rifle's have a fore grip as well. But when looking at the two models in mesh view I noticed that the grip is placed a little more backwards compared to where the Dutch place their grips so that could be a problem. I am sure the DEV's will find a way to make it work. :-o

arjan wrote:Looking pretty Nice, do you plan on adding those openfolded lenscovers? They should Be on the SRIM.
I am not really planning on making those to be honest. A lot of the ingame rifle's should be having them but don't actually have them. Also, it would just be extra work for the animator.

The model and the UV maps are 99% done. I just have to add a few small details and scale the rifle. (The mag pull will be seen on some rifle's)

But what would be the best way to scale the rilfe??

Adriaan told me this a while ago:
Adriaan wrote:Scaling in Element mode should not cause any issues, but scaling in Object mode will. You can still do it though as long as you always reset the object's transform afterwards, using the Reset XForm utility.

Scaling in element mode will work fine for the butt stock and the hand guards, but the other parts I would definitely prefer scaling in object mode. If I scale the receiver in element mode, the separate elements will end up like this:

In object mode, like this:

The thing is, I have never used the reset xform utility so I wouldn't know rather if I used it the right way in case I would decide to scale in object mode...

I was gonna comment on the foregrips position, best move it back a bit so you can actually use m4/m16 animations.

Import the rifle to be 100%, bug can easily change this on export as well.

Yeah, make it like M4 indeed (or whatever weapon fits best), so we can actually use the anims. You wouldn't really notice the foregrip position ingame anyway I think.

Would be very good, because new animations are very hard to come by and would delay the weapon enormously.

Looks great so far, man!
