Correct. I have to admit, I love the marksman and sniper roles and kits when they are played CORRECTLY. If I get the chance, I usually go sniper or DM during a clan match with iGi. Form there I use it for harassing the hell out of en approach routes while the rest of the squad get's some restbite to set up a perimeter and grab the flag. Once it's taken, you move to higher ground or a better position just behind your squad's main body, so you can cover any advance or withdrawl that may or may not take place. It's all about having that long-range capability and using it effectively so that your squad benefits, not just your personal score :s TBH I have vary rarely, if ever, checked out my score and thought I was uber l33t because I can shoot people lol, I'm happier seeing the teamwork points going up knowing I'm making a difference :)

The snipers aren't a lonewolfing kit, and we'll no doubt make sure as hell that they aren't used as such in PR. As dbazo said, they are a platoon/company commander asset, and better communication with the Commander would be better.

Thread Hijack:
By the way, would it be possible to make the Limited kits only available for higher ranks, or is that completely hardcoded?

Sniper should only get "more" points for neutralize:

OPFOR Commander, SL.

After the past two nights my feelings on snipers kits has been changed. A guy I've started playing with a lot lately (Snowman), is a good sniper. On an average round he goes sniper he racks up about 30 kills and no deaths. All the while providing very good overwatch to our squad. Now he does not go off and sit in some favorable camping spot and just pick off guys. He shadows our squad (much further away then a DM would obviously), and gives us good intel on the objective we are coming up on. Not to mention supporting us with his great sniping skills.

I don't think snipers or DMs should be anymore limited than what is currently in place. All that needs to be done is having competant people use those kits. All other discussion is trivial.

I was just about to open a thread on the same topic.

The solution is simple: The sniper kit should only require one person in a squad to request.

no chance in hell the sniper will be unlimited..a good sniper right now is a very good thing to have and they have a real impact on the battlefield without having sniper wars over some valley or something when everyone camps a spot...not to mention getting killed by a sniper has become less frequent thank god....

I wish there was no sniper kit .
Reason ? -2 non-teamplayers and complete fucking idiots (c) 'Pwned Life'

p/s DMR per each squad + riflemen with their 4x optics would be just fine .

If people dont play ball in basic terms like that i kick, lock and invite those people i know are good teamplayers.
I really like it when SL are doing this. VOIP and TEMAWORK squads where is active SL who knows whats is ho doing and what is he going to do are simply fantastic. Much more immersion and fun then in deft and mute squads where are players doing what they want = lonewolfing.
Darkpowder wrote: Its the old story again, with people being obsessed with kills personally rather than the objective of the team. this goes back to CS days.

Take away personal K :D ratios and all that, or award a LOT more points for team objectives. Snipers/Des. Marksmen perhaps only getting kill points at all for actually killing a target spotted by a member of their own squad.
Score system could be further enhanced if it would give much more points to each player on winner side (2x like to commander) This way it could be much more interesting for scorehunters to Win (and play in team) then to have high score but to loose.

'[R-DEV wrote:fuzzhead']yeap this is how you gotta do it.... snipers or no snipers, it isnt going to change the habit of these lonewolf players...

i think there should only be 1 sniper kit per team, to reduce this role further.

right now there is 2 avaliable per team, and 2 designated marksmen. id like to see only ONE sniper kit avaliable per team on a full server.

like you said it has limited uses and it really caters to the people who are not optimal PR teamplayers
Ditto.

Couldnt agree more,
in an average map you have two pilots 3-4 crewman one commander and always 2 snipers and 2 marksman and 2 guys camping to get one of those kits.Only 20 grunts left...

P.S:I am not sure about exact numbers of v.06

for god's sakes, no more rules!
leave it as it is, people can make a custom squad for sniping.

I support the idea to somehow stop non-squadies from requesting snipers and marksmen(not pick up enemies though). If they are to leave the squad, they "Have 10 seconds to comply" or face certain death. Also, squad leaders cannot requets the sniper kit. This basicly disallows 'free loaders' who just set up a squad to get a kit and then 5 other players do the exact same thing in the same squad. They dont get kicked because the SL just doesnt care and are not really a squad, nor do they contribute much.

The same should go fr marksman, because it seems people see it as the next best thing to lone wolf with.

The two minute delay in place in .6 partially solves the issue. Sniper whores can't just hop into any random squad and immediately grab a sniper kit, and competent SLs will note that somebody is spamming sniper kit requests instead of actively participating.

Disabling SLs from being snipers wouldn't really help that much, I think. It would encourage sniper teams, with the SL being the spotter (which is, AFAIK, realistic, as spotters are higher rank and handle comms with other units).. The problem is, if you offered to be a spotter for somebody willing to snipe, you'd have a really hard time finding a sniper competent enough to work with. Most people who request sniper kits do not care about teamwork, and wouldn't want to work with a spotter. You could also get snipers inside of full infantry squads, but I don't feel that it's the optimal solution - snipers aren't really capable of keeping up with a traveling squad and still remaining effective, and can't act as a recon force directly under the commander when part of an infantry squad. That's what marksmen are for (a kit, which, BTW, is probably the most misused/abused in the game - it's hard to find someone who will actually use it to support his squad).

I like that. If you are in a squad, grab a kit (could be all, or just select ones like sniper and DM) and you leave with that kit you get a warning followed by death. I'm not sure if it should enforce that you rejoin the same squad or just any squad? Some times your playing and then see a new squad pop up with a SL you know is good and leave to join it.

Baker we can't leave it as it is and have a custom squad for sniping because it would involve having 2 other people doing absolutely nothing to do with sniping.

I think the best things that have been suggested are making it so you only need to be in a squad on your own and you have to get it from a main base not a flag RP. This would also mean teams would have to work with snipers to insert them as well as snipers being expected to work in favour of the team.

Pickup kits would mean that people not working as a team wouldn't even need a squad to snipe and would further the gap in teamplay.

no qm kits will be available outside of squads. both an engine limitation and a conscious design choice.

Only need 2 in your squad for sniper kit.

And frankly PR is absolutely NOT a game designed for lonewolf leet snipers. If you want to skulk off with a partner / spotter and get some kills while you scout for your team / squad... have at 'er, but .. aside from the odd pickup kit here and there .. we will not implement game mechanics that encourage loner style play.

If you can get a kit and leave a squad and not die for an entire round .. therein lies your lonewolf facility. This is because in v0.6 there is no more kit reservation, there is a 2 minute delay to get kits when you join a squad and there is a replenish delay on some kits going back into the pool.

So if you truly are "1337" we have designed some options that will work for you. For those that just *think* you are 1337... practise, practise, practise!

1 sniper rifle per team and only with a full team of 32 players. That way, you could only snipe on full 64/64 servers, and the snipers would had to get organised, or they would be just a piece of **** and not useful to the team at all...

I wonder, why some servers dont server-side mod and implement this, would be really good to test out, see how players will react...
Possible answers:

Server with 64 players:

Sorry noobhead, I already issued all (1) of the SNIPER kits, how about a milkshake?
<hunts down the sniper and teamkills him>

Server with less than 64 players:

Sorry noobhead, I was never issued any SNIPER kits.
"z0mg, w3r3 i5 tEh 1337 Sn1peRz0r Rifl3 !!111"
<noobhead has disconnected from the server>
