other plan,
skip the arty and put howitsers in.
you need atlease 2 crewman (driver/shooter) to opperate these things,
commander could give them targets, and they aim to coordinates.
this way arty wont get used so ofthe I'm not gonna be the one who's getting hi's brains blow out all the time

and I voted that I'd rather go sniping, it would realy be borring as ....
if it were a howitser atleast I'd be able to driver around.

in desert combat...certain classes have artillery spotting binocs (for lack of a technichal term). when they look at an area and click *Call for arty* on the command rose... all people in the gunners position of artillery pieces can right click to see from a camera located above the spotter that will look at the spotted area. when a shell is fired... the camera will turn to look at the arty shell on its way and the gunner makes adjustments accordingly... to avoid raping, the mobile artillery only gets 20 or so rounds till it must be reloaded... and this reloading has to be from an ammo box placed in varios places throughout the level or supply drops...

How about making the artillery more interesting by using MOBILE artillery? This would add a real edge to the game, because for the team attacking artillery you'd need more dedication to take it out, but it would be more rewarding to do so, and for the team using artillery you can re-position and use different tactics to get effective fire on a target.
EXAMPLES of mobile artillery:
British
American

Personaly I think the upcoming mortars, if done right, will be better then all this talk of new manned arty. Mortars are going to have a better arc to bring the shells in closer to vertical so you can hit targets in urban areas vs. a big 155mm shell screaming in on a more horizantal arc having to contend with buildings. Sure in real life that 155mm shell would turn the building to dust and could hit the people behind it but PR doesn't have that. The mortar teams will be mobile like people want. With the mortars you could still be usefull to your squad if you can deploy/pick up your mortar and keep moving with your squad. Think of the tactics, having your mortar crew set up while the 4 other guys in the squad advance, the mortar shells are raining down on the CP bodies flying, then as the squad gets close the shelling stops only now the air is filled with lead from your squad clearing the CP
Can't wait.
Cheers,

No this is a unnecessary use of the limited man power that is available in a 64 player server, just pretend bots are operating the artillery.

starting to see a flood of Vanilla noobs in this thread, but thats okay, to anyone who doesn't want to load, explain this for me, why are 5-10 people ALWAYS at the airport doing nothing, might as well put them to work. it's okay if you're not a patient person, i have no problem with you. if you don't want to load shells all day, chances are you have ADHD and would rather be in an infantry squad, the game needs infantry.
If we can give 3 of these hobos (what i will call the people wandering around the airport) jobs at one of the most important weapons on the battlefield, what have we done wrong?.
what i'm saying is it's okay if you don't want to do artillery, but it gives someone else something to do.
hope you understand the analogy

Ummm, your poll is leading.
You should not imply that if you do not like to or choose to do something you are a sniper (the trademark for an uncooperative person on a team who usually has a high number of deaths with little kills because of their lack of decisive thinking).
I would not like to be a loader, this is supposed to be a game; I am supposed to have fun. If you find it fun, great. I do not.
If I want to load artillery rounds I'll join the Royal Artillery regiment.

what analogy ?

my analogy was to the people wandering around the airport, calling them hobos. and the artillery was "putting them to work" thus solving the problem.

DarkTalon if you think the "hobos" will move more then 5' from the spawn for_____________ (insert M95, Cobra, A10) to go be helpfull you are sadly mistaken. I appreciate that there are people who are willing to help the team in a less then glorious way. I don't want to load artillery in game. If it's implemented I will be one of the first guys over there helping out loading when I can because I know it helps my team. But I still would rather be working a CP with my squad or using the mortars in support of my Squad.
Maybe you could get the "Hobos" to clean up around the base or make some snacks for the returning troops???

I think the mobile mortar will fill this role pretty well.

That's what the NAAFI is for
No loader. It's the second worst job in the world (first is cleaning up the toilet after i've released the remains of a vindaloo into there

). Seriously, maybe some people would do a couple of shots until a chopper spawns, but a whole game? How many people are going to say 'O, I know! I'll go on PR and load a cannon for half an hour!'?
I think that manned artillery would be good, as long as it is made interesting, so that people will actually do it. The challenge would be making it interesting. you'd have to design it so that the gunners would have to employ special tactics for different scenarios, and keep changing those tactics. which would be very complicated, and I very much doubt it would be worth the effort of designing such a system.

Expendable Grunt wrote:How about just mess with the model/animation to include people looking things that do the loading animation?
I know the dev's wouldn't add it because it's "too much work for so little" or whatnot, but it would be preferable IMO to manned by player arty.
I too would prefer for the artillery team to be bot animated. It doesn't do much to have real players loading the artillery throughout the duration of a round.
Several bots could take over this role. The more that die the longer it should take for the next load and the one after that, etc. If they all die then they would have a respawn timer on them to spawn back at the artillery.
You could essentially knock out the artillery with a good sniper. That's how it ought to be unless the team with the arty is using those futuristic auto-loading weapons.
Look 1 bomber could ruin those loaders' day all round, or a good squad, or pretty much anything else that could make it to the arty. The fact is arty is a favorite target already. If the enemy can get close enough to satchel or c4 the arty now why would you want to be the poor SOB that has to be there when the stuff hits the fan? And for what? You wouldn't get to see much action aside from defending the arty. Even then you should be out gunned.
IMO it's an unnecessary group. Unless the artillery is completely reworked or something better is exchanged for the artillery in the commander assets then I don't see why any more fuss should be spent on artillery.
As far as control goes [accuracy] I think it would be a very bad idea to increase the cone of fire to prevent pixel hunting. The future doesn't have LESS accurate artillery planned. Leave that much to the player controlled mortar, which I would be fine with.

since you guys seem very eager to run my loading system into the ground, i'll just scrap that. one man artillery would still be good. so just ignore the poll.
anyways i just read about IDF's new artillery

pretty much the same thing i requested, which is a manned stationary weapon. I hope they can get a good firing system up. maybe the PR can get something like this. good luck to the IDF team in this. and i hope the PR team can find some way to make a realistic and useful artillery system.

I don't want bot ai doing the loading of the arty. I can only assume, I know I shouldn't asssume but..., the work required to make all this happen would be huge and for what? I think efforts could be put into better areas of the game then a cool looking arty squad.
Cheers,
