Make it fun...
Not over zealous role playing but just remember those lil characters on screen are controlled by real people just like you, when they're in your squad you're also their host. Give them a good game, make it exciting, panic, laugh withdraw under covering fire, be adventurous.
Mad firefights in jungles over nothing can be fun... and good practice
Make it worthwhile...
It dosn't matter if you want Jones to go stare at a tree and give "recon" if he knows it's going to be a shitty job he wont wanna do it. Jones needs to feel like his job... Stariing at a tree, is the most important job in the world and he'll need congratulating for it regularly.
If people do a good job some of the best rounds are with people keeping 1 kit all round, you get to know them as Crisis the L-AT, Heskey the auto rifle, Themedic... The medic, they all do their job and do it well and with encouragement any pubby can feel that responsibility of "their job" which is rewarding
when you inform your squad of your evil plans, tell them why they're doing it and what you hope to achieve, if they don't know why they're doing it and what you expect from them then there's no point
Think what you'd do if you were the enemy...
Think about everything around you...
Think about what's the worst thing that could happen? and be prepared for it...
If you're intelligent this is when playing against a bunch of tards can become a challenge.
If you think you'd do something if you were in the enemies shoes then defend yourself against it.
If you think soldiers will flank down the alleyway then get someone to cover that alleyway (probably Jones, he'll be bored, he's been tree staring for a while now)
Got AT? Go tank hunting! Not got AT? then run away from tanks!
KISS your players...
Keep it simple stupid
At the end of the day you've got a goal to achieve and that's hopefully to win the game throguh superios tactics. You may have language barriers with some players or one may be 12, another might be just plain stupid.
If you have an extremely complex pincer attack with one supporting fireteam distracting for a fast assault team then reinforcing... your SMs dont neccessarliy need to know.
Use your squadmembers as blunt instruments, tell him to shoot there, hell shoot there, tell him to empty his nade pouch over the wall, he does it.
Whatever your plan is and no matter how stupid it's appear, roll with it and take the blame if it goes wrong, squadmembers wont abandon you for a screw up (unless theyre tossers) accept the bad and carry on with a different idea, learn.
Stamp your Authorit-ay...
you're there to have fun to. If people dislike your style of SLing then they can piss off. allow people to give their input on a plan and consider it with no bias (you are not the centre of the universe after all) and either accept and adapt or reject and explain.
You're the SL and you have final say and responsibility if it goes tits up, the grunts are just there to pull the trigger
again, you're the boss so dont feel bad about expecting something to be done promptly when you order it be done, you ask for a lot of things but order for most, the game is military realism, and in them military you follow your orders no matter how insane, when it all goes to shit you can say "he told me to do it!"
That's all I've got for ya
