i can just say, what i have said on some other points, SMGs are not really realistic for regular forces and would be quite useless, when your enemy is a bit away, if you want a second rifle for the MEC, the HK33 is the only rifle that might come, and not as replacement for the g3, but as addition.

What is there to overload? What's so hard about changing a value in some table in the BF2 editor or something to the same effect?

Nice to see how some people have turned this thread into a place to brag about their 1337ish G3-skillz.

The sucky CQC-performance (high reciol, small magazine, etc.) of the G3 is a balance issue. A RL-army fielding it to is troops would equip certain numbers of them with more CQC-focused weapons to make up for this disadvantage. I've already told you about how the Swedish army widely used SMGs during their G3-period, and I'm sure there are more examples (Brits when they used the FAL?).

The rifleman with ironsights-kit is supposed to be more focused on CQB, right? Would it hurt if we just replaced the ironsighted G3 he's using with a MP5?

To the argument that "MEC only fights in mountains and deserts and therefore don't need CQC-weapons": Believe it or not, but there are cities in the middle east aswell.

Intresting idea, what I would do is if we would add the mp5 to officer, rifleman, scoped rifleman, and medic (engy shouldn't carry one) and some limited kits, then i would increase the recoil a bit on the g3, make sure damage doesn't screw up balance, and add the mp5 with single and burst only (for balance?). Also, decrease mags on g3, and add 2 or 3 to mp5 from crewman. maybe the mp5a3, seeing as it is simular to the current G3 in game.

but the a3 only has single, and full auto.

This change is worth thinking about, it is a great idea.

What about something like the MP5K as a back up to the rifleman kits, but with very limited ammo (like 1 + 2 mags?). it'd fit the roll kinda well and limiting the ammo like so means it wont be used as a primary weapon just in the situations where its in your face CQB

another idea i had from playing earlier was the possibility of the officer kit with ironsights, i was thinking that the officer kit on the spawn screen be iron sights and the SL can then request a scoped kit from RP, base, bunker etc... thoughts?

Or, lower the recoil, having a button that will command steady rifle or change the whole weapon to the mp5, that I like.
How about the strange weapon that eehh... the special operations used in Bf2??

A pointman kit is fine. Why add MP5's everywhere? It's really not THAT effective.

Adding back up SMGs to every kit simply isn't realistic. Typically troops will carry a single primary weapon, in the case of the MEC, I'd imagine either an SMG or a Battle Rifle. Supporting forces (engineers, medics, artillerymen, crewmen, etc) would be more likely to carry the smaller, lighter and more convinient SMG while line infantry mainly carry the Rifle. There will of course be exceptions and the suggested "pointman" kit would be a good representation of that.

Replacing the Medic's or Engineer's rifle with an SMG is not a good idea, as this would unbalance the game in favor of factions who do have rifles for these classes. Having a limited (or perhaps even a dedicated spawning kit) with an SMG to represent troops tooled up for close quarters (basically a rifleman kit, maybe add a couple of magazines on top of the usual 8 to compensate for the significant downfalls of having an MP5) or those that have simply begged, stolen or borrowed SMGs because they're fed up of huffing around with big, heavy rifles all day :p
