All high, AA x8 at 1280x800 with 60+FPS, but for a few maps which I don't feel like having to name at the moment my FPS at times drops down to 25-40FPS. I would guess the AA brings down the FPS on maps with a lot of statics like trees.
May I inquire as to the specs of this laptop?

If you check "tweakguides" and use the bf2 one as a guide for PR you will be good to go. Often the higher settings are overkill and unnoticable to most yet the performance penalty is usually heavy. Also stuff like shadows are CPU intensive so if your CPU is weak that setting will crush your fps. Stuff like textures, AA, explosions smoke grenades (or just smoke in general) are all graphics card domain so when a bunch of smoke fills the area and your fps drop that's cause your video card is struggling (fill rate I believe).

Maybe you are trying to start up with a refresh rate of 59? Can that be a problem?

change the profile named Default to run at 1024x768

located under MyDocs>BF2>Profiles>default

then also change the profile you want to use and set that at 1024x768, located in the same directory.

install and use the widescreen fixer aswell.

*EDIT* all high 4x AA+AF @ 1680x1050

--------------------

Go to:
My Documents/Battlefield 2/Profiles/Default

Open:
Video.con (using notepad)

Edit this line to read:
VideoSettings.setResolution 1280x1024@60Hz

--------

It doesn't matter that you're specifying 1280x1024 in Video.con because the shortcut is telling the game to override it, but Video.con must use a resolution natively supported by BF2. 1680x1050 isn't.

Then double-check your video.con files located in /Profiles/001/ , /002/ etc to make sure they all read the same:

VideoSettings.setResolution 1280x1024@60Hz

And bingo, should be fixed.

it is cus you are using

+szx 1680 +szy 1280

it should work if you set it to

+szx 1680 +szy 1050

If you are running at 59hz, playing BF2 is impossible. :( The only solution is to connect an external monitor if you're using a laptop, which I have.

BF2 does not support one hertz difference below 60. Red Alert 2, Kyrandia, Myst, WarCraft II, and all of these other old games work perfectly fine at 59hz, but not BF2. :(
