I dunno, we don't use 12 hour system, but I'm quite sure that 12pm is midnight and 12am is noon.

hehe well think again.

am means before noon (midday) and pm means after noon so as soon as a new day starts it becomes before noon again. It is a bit confusing I guess hence why military use 24hr clock afaik

Well actually
am = ante meridiem (literally before the middle of the day)
pm = post meridiem (listerally after the middle of the day)

same thing ofc, thought I'd let my pedantic side out for a stroll

just outta curiousity I saw it somewhere in the ballistics thread I'm sure, What range will these rifles be Zeroed at?

If it remains at 300m I struggle to think how to ballistics could come much into play

However chatting with my father (and Id trust his judgement after 35 years in the army lol) He says the rifles (such as an M16) are normally zeroed to 100m, 300m is just about their maximum effective range, although they can shoot up to 600m it's extreeeeeemely inaccurate

Quite important imho both for realism and of course itll bring firefights closer and make those longer range shots far more "interesting"

With of most of these rifles, it is my understanding that you zero them to one range then dial in the range you need.

For example, you zero the M4 at 25m using a particular setting (the small aperture sight set at the 300m elevation knob setting). You then select the one of two rear sight apertures. The one with the large hole is for 0-200m and the one with the smaller hole is for 300-600m. When using the small aperture you use the elevation dial to select the range, otherwise you leave it on the 300m setting.

In the case of the G3A3, your weapon is factory zeroed and you select one of four pre-zeroed rear sight apertures. They go from 100m though to 400m in 100m increments.

With the SUSAT on the L85A2, I believe that you zero the weapon at 25m with a particular elevation dial setting and then dial in the appropriate range to your target.

it wasnt just 35 years ago he was in the army lol he start in '67 as Private left in '02 as Major

afaik you dial in your zero on a target range and you aim off when in combat, you never fiddle with the dials in the middle of battle as the zero is veeeeery sensitive.

I wouldnt think you'd bother with a zero above 300m as the bullet's gonna start getting sooo inaccurate once you factor in humidty, wind speed air temperature and so forth

One thing I can defo confirm is my dad has been a weapons instructor and the L85a2 is defo zeroed in at 100m and when shooting a 300m target you aim up by 2inchs (50mm)

Can't see the point in having a 5.56 round zeroed to 300m when over that range the anomalies start to occur and that tiny round can barely just stop a person, not to mention that everything under 300m you need to aim down for and most scopes dont have increments going up for when you need to aim down

With iron sights on an M16 a 500m target is smaller than the front sight post, something you just wouldn't bother with irl

100m zero is far more flexible for targets at different ranges rather than having the rifle zeroed close to its max range :S can't imagine why you'd want that
