Just wondering and I think I mentioned it during testing but generally on a nuclear powered aircraft carrier black smoke is considered a very bad thing....

Yeah, the smoke is bad, but isn't it just smoke because the carrier's been attacked? (So the fire will quickly be extinguished by the imaginary fire fighter class)

USS Essex is powered by Gas Turbines: (Wikipedia, i know, but it can't be that wrong)

Propulsion: Two boilers, two geared steam turbines, two shafts, 70,000 shaft horsepower (52 MW);
(2 × General Electric LM2500 gas turbines, two geared turbines, two shafts in Makin Island)


Anyway, even still, i like the smoke, but maybe it should be toned down a lot, so its just a faint grey. However, i don't know anything about effects so it probably isn't possible without making a new one.

damn, doing a little bit of research dose look like its nuclear power, thought it was a diesel or something.

what it fails to mention is that the gas for the Geared steam turbines is part of nuclear power, since the core heats up the water, turns it into steam, which in turn makes the steam turn the turbines which = power.


EDIT: In fact LM, can you find me where abouts it says its nuclear? I can't find any direct info, the Nimitz says its Nuclear strait off... seems kinda odd for it not to be directly mentioned anywhere...

you sure? I don't know very much about the Essex or warships in general, but i don't see anything mentioned on nuclear power anywhere.

na not sure, I doubt it is, i would have thought it would have been mentioned some where, but no where. The Nimitz has the word nuclear all over it...

EDIT: anyways gone over many images of the essex now and there is nothing like thick black smoke which I had so going to remove it anyways.

The USS Essex is not nuclear powered: The US Navy -- Fact File (scroll down to Wasp class). As such, some amount of exhaust smoke is probably realistic - although nowhere near the extent in the screenshot. Looks cool, but taking into account the colour of the smoke, looks more like a fire to me.
