I think a vehicle mounted mortar is a good idea. You'ld prevent raping with too many of them, give the nme a chance to take them out fast if he can spot the area the fire comes from and prevent the use as direct firing guns.
My suggestion: Heavy mortar towed by a supply truck. You could have a variety of different shells and resuply for other troops on that one too.
I read about teargas nades on one of the other threads for mortar. Not too bad of an idea, but normal smokescreens are enough to stop infantry from getting into them.
We used one during training to ***** the other party , marking the use of ABC-weapons with a smoke-can and ABC-warning-flare during an 'ordered retreat' (The whole exercise was plain bullsh...)
We got a good nose full of the stuff while getting back to our jeeps and it caused everyon to cough for five minutes afterwards.
Maybe cause slight vision blur and stamina drain while in smoke ?

So its been almost a year, and Ive heard many rumors that mortars are in the works. Well, a year later, what are your guys' opinions on mortars? I think if it wouldn't be too much trouble, it would be really nice to have vehicle mounted mortars, such as the M113 mortar truck for the US, and man portable mortars for the insurgents.

The idea is still thrown around. Trust us we want mortars as well! Hopefully in the near future, I'm personally hoping we can get something in before a 1.0 release, but who knows. Also my personal idea was to have static mortars at the main base and maybe used to replace or in conjuction with arty. But other devs have their own ideas, so who really knows

Hey as long as I can be an insurgent and be able to conduct mortar attacks on the US main with nastygas as my spotter, Im fine
I dont need no minimap point and click system.

We're just getting in decent shape in terms of backlog in the production pipeline .. production generally starts with modelling and, wrt small arms, we've cleared out a lot of backlog, so mortars are becoming a real possibility.

How about requestable Mortar kit?
This will likely need some kind of observation implementation also. Maybe we could take a legal look at what PoE are doing?

I would like having a vehicle mounted mortar, but on which vehicle ? If we would have the US Army in game a Stryker would be cool, but has the USMC a mortarcarrinig vehicle ?

I've often thought it would be cool to get a squad together composed of:
spec ops SL, 3 grenadiers, a rifleman, and support gunner.
Rifleman keeps resupplying the grenadiers, while they hide behind some effective cover. SL finds of good spot and starts calling in attack commands, along with "further" or "closer" advice. And the support gunner can protect the main group from enemies popping out from around the cover.
You could really inflict some damage that way. Especially in crowded servers, and especially once you'd climbed the learning curve a bit.

Too many mortarmen would be no good, I would suggest making it a requestable kit, with drawbacks...
Mortar systems are heavy, which is why they are normally carried by 2 men.
Ammo would be in short supply, and could only be retrieved from crates or vehicles.
Also a user-friendly system would need to be designed to make the things work, i can't even begin to expound on the headaches using mortars caused me in DC.

Yes.

Nope. The USMC uses the LAV-M, which has an M252 81mm mortar mounted on a turntable with a 360 degree traverse.
(High-res)
Until HIMARS gets fielded, it's the only self-propelled indirect fire weapon they have.

This is a Advanced MOrtar System (AMOS) mounted on a CV90.

more info here -
http://www.bellum.nu/armoury/PHSSG120AMOS.html
We might not have been at war for last 200 years, but we still know how to make good weapons
If a vehicle mounted mortar system is to be implemented I think this is interesting, on one of the picture you can see that they have mounted the AMOS system on a american m113, dont think its in use though.
