I dont think your nuke idea is going to happen, thats like the 5th time you've mentioned it right? ;)

Thanks to everyone who played Qwai on iGi before it crashed tonight, proved that when everything clicks, a commander is still a useful tool. Shame we didnt get to test out our second wave of tanks to turn fishing village defence into attack. For once, everyone actually fed stuff back to me so I was able to make informed choices and feed through stuff to the relevant SL's. No way I could do all of that without being inside the metal box though, even if it's a little boring when it's quiet.

I played commander once in 0.8 one of the sqwads told me to tell the other sqwad to watch theyr back, i told that several times no response from the second sqwad, 2 min later they got killed from the back by a jeep, since i dont play commander anymore because the SL's never listen to the commander's orders, and being a commander is very booring.

Personally I don't mind sitting in a tin can stationary, looking at a map, seeing where people are dying and when rally points are over-run. I enjoy relaying information to and from squads, especially at home on [T&T] where I know at least 2 squads will listen and talk to me.

I think the commander would have more than enough to do if squad leaders did their jobs. BF2 allows that chain of command.

An SL who does well at ordering his squad members around but doesn't communicate with, or listen to the commander is a bad SL.

Maybe just give them back the God eye (the last level zoom) if possible augmented so that resolution is cut down a bit (gray scale??)?

Argument for it; in the future when this war is taking place, satellite tech would have advanced far enough for it to happen.

If balanced well enough, this can give a comm basic information about what is happening on the field and give them more control of the situation. While not be game breaking to stealth and secrecy of the game.

Hmmm. I think it will be too easy for him to help squads look for enemy troops. When one of your squads is in a key position and they are under fire the CO moves his godeye over there to help locate the enemy. Muzzle flashes are easy to see you know.

He is not a commander any more. The slot should be called the Communications officer.

I agree with the commander vehicle, quite interesting (could move like an AAV with only one seat to move it all, also remember this thing CAN'T FIRE it's unarmed and meant only for communications/information relay for command line.) The only thing is we'd need to model new vehicles... Would have to wait for PR .9, but i think it's realistic and a good idea.

About the rest... There's nothing much more to do about the commander than either give him more stuff to do, or just let him either have his satelite overview or be able to move out of the.. tin can.

Problem is maps that do not require that much interaction. Tad sae comes to mind. A CO would hugely impact the game, but all there is to do for him is to assign squads or tell squads to relocate. Lots of idle time. Therefore I suggest we introduce a Lieutnant who can access the command screen outside his shaq, on the maps that do not require as much input. For maps like qwai and kashan and the like leave everything as is.

1 - Squad leaders must be receptive to being led.
2 - Commanders must be given more things to do. Such as: more different types of area attacks, bring back the UAV (in some form).
3 - Commanders must be given the ability to look around while in the box (security reasons)
did you get "slammed" a few times?

in the organized environment where Commander knows his SL's and vice versa
(clan matches/tournaments) this works pretty good.
In a regular pub game it's extremely rare to have a good "relationship" between
Co's and SL's.
Most jump in for an area attack or to spell something stupid with the icons.
Don't know what's coming in 0.85 but "The eye of god" would bring more Co's
even thou it's pretty lame

That's one thing I don't get:the SL can zoom in x3 and Co's only x2
but yea give Co's more things / vehicle/area attack...)
The Russians have several Command variants of the tanks and BTR's.

from wiki:

BTR-80AK - command variant of the BTR-80A with two whip antennas in the rear corners and with only 1 firing port on the right hull side.

BMP-3K (komandnyi) - Tactical command variant, includes additional radios R-173, an AB-1 APU, a navigation device TNA-4-6 and the "Ainet" round fuzing capability. The BMP-3K lacks the bow machine guns and has its whip antennas mounted on the rear hull. Crew: 3+3.

Command tanks with additional radio equipment have K added to their designation for komandirskiy, ‘command’, for example, T-80BK is the command version of the T-80B

and so on

I kinda like that idea of a CO on the field now though. Because like Cassius said hes only watching dots move and not doing anything more than communications relay.

If hes more like a luitenant with his own squad and can still acces CO screen when hes dead. Theres more to do as a CO.

But its still going to be hard when hes in combat and another SL needs something. If we get a CO vehicle lets at least make it some kind of a transport. Now with the new logistics it would be nice to at least have the commander to ferry around some troops while hes talking to the team.

That goes for the maps which are only infantery. On maps with a lot of assets like Kashan Qwai and anything that has air transport or support the co wont be bored.

Sure being in the field while somebody is commanding is more fun than commanding, for me too. But its one spot out of 32, so you have to bite the bullet only once in a while. Once each 32 games to be precisely, thouhg if we take into account not everybody is a decent commander, once every 5-10 games.

Do something to combine the role of logistics and the commander.

It really seems to be a big problem for the community, that the Tin Box CO is available with all its static challenges.

I support the logistic idea and would even say that maybe a compromise as follows would be a solution:

1. TIN BOX
Keep the Tin Box as it is.

2. LAP TOP
Make a model of a lap-top or similar computer/screen equipment to be taken into the field by the CO only if needed. However make sure that this mobile equipment only work X time and has to be recharged in the Tin Box for X time before available for another field tour again. And make sure that if the CO drops the laptop equipment in the field and the enemy CO pick it up, that player will be able to use it for as long the batteries run but not without cost, cause in such case the enemy CO would have to drop his own lap top too.
Define irony. A bunch of guys playing PR year after year. A game teaching initiative as the prime mover.
However, in regard to EA, these guys never took the initiative.
