That was the only use it had back in the days.
I still haven't figured out how to spot enemies on the map as a civie. Can anyone explain it for me?

Yes, you have to be squad leader.
Best thing to do is mark the location with your binoculars, then pull out the phone so you can have a better idea of the distance.
