If it hits the right places. Otherwise you might just be shooting into thin air... The "armour" is designed so that the .50 can penetrate cleanly without damaging, fuel takes are specially protected (be special healing tanks), rotors can have holes in them and still provide lift, there are 2 engines and double of almost every system.

Those Apaches TheOldBreed is talking about weren't taking anti-aircraft fire at distances under a kilometer. Distance is a significant factor even for bullets that large. Hence the reason Apaches use 30mm guns, rockets and missiles.
Extremely true, which it is so unbalanced... Aircraft and apcs to a lesser extent are forced into the engagement range where the .50 are most effective, negating all the advantages a helicopter has with its higher firepower and ranges. Either ranges need to be increased, be proportional, or the damage adjusted to compensate for this...

what if you miss 9/10 times and hit the 1/10 times and you keep doing that and it blows up with 3 hits
what if you hit it alot but that 1/10 bullet always just seems to miss
???
Then it may at least give the impression that those few, specific rounds hit vital kill points in the vehicle.

I'm no expert but theres probably a good reason why the M2 Browning is still preferred by the military today, almost hundred years after its birth.

in that case it wouldn't be 1/10 it shuold be increased to something like 3-4/10
