Re: Have video games influenced a decision for you to join the military?
My parents sent me to military school in 6th grade, i really got to know some marines and others active and retired in the military from it, it really opened up the possibility to it happening, playing games like PR in a teamwork environment with other clan mates made me think, "hey as long as i make a few friends in the military it doesn't seem to bad"
As games advance and become more realistic it defiantly makes me think about it once in a while, and if i wasnt going to college and my parents would let me, i probably would join

If you want to go to college more, and your parents not wanting you to is more important to you than joining, you should probably reassess how much you really want to enlist.Conman51 wrote:if i wasnt going to college and my parents would let me, i probably would join

Re: Have video games influenced a decision for you to join the military?
I've always been interested in military stuff. Weapons, tactics, history etc. So always played military games. Was in the Air Cadets at school, but only considered signing up for the briefest of moments. I was too young and into science, now I'm too well qualified and still into science.

Re: Have video games influenced a decision for you to join the military?
Yes, but family-tradition, movies, and toys also influenced this as well.
All my family members, parents, uncles, grand-parents, great-ancestors all were in the military at one point in their lives. From mandatory conscription in South Korea, to fighting off Japanese pirates back in the 16th century, there's a lot of tales and stories about what it's like being in the military, and I have a sense and obligation to serve in the military to carry on this tradition.
Also as a small child, I had a lot of military-themed toys. Warplanes, sets of toy-soldiers, I bet having so much fun with them makes me think that a life in the military would be pretty rewarding as well.
Plus watching tanks, warfare in movies and t.v. was so intriguing to me.
Nowadays, I just know way too much about weapons/tactics/ and military history to let it go to waste. I want to put all this knowledge into application, instead of just randomly floating in my head.
In addition, service is a value I prioritize, so serving my country is also a huge factor in influencing me to join.
But video games made the military seem so exciting and i don't really know how to describe it. Constantly being immersed by these military-themes definitely influenced me to try to pursue some sort of military career. However, unfortunately eczema and asthma is barring me from enlistment. Hopefully I can find a way.

Re: Have video games influenced a decision for you to join the military?
I've always been interested in military, but I never really thought about it as a career. I don't know if it was these games but after I found out about PR and played I started to think about military career.
But video games, even if they were realistic, give you only one opinion. I must think about the second view too. I'm not a nationalist, I don't think I'd want to kill people because some government orders me to..So no, I'm not wanting a military career, but games made me think about it.
I'm 16 years old.

Currently on the way to becoming an officer in the US Army. I have always enjoyed video games with a military theme as I have always been interested in the military. I would say that video games have influenced me somewhat, but I don't think my career choice would be different had I not played video games.

Re: Have video games influenced a decision for you to join the military?
I have always wanted to join military, since I was five. Video games like ArmA2, Project Reality has influenced me more joining, but mostly my family's history is, because my great great grandfather was in WW1, my great grandfather was fighting in WW2 in red army, he lost leg there, my grandfather was in Soviet navy, my father was in red army for 8 years, he had to leave because he got married with my mother and I born.
I am thinking to join navy.

Re: Have video games influenced a decision for you to join the military?
I've always thought of joining since the 6th grade. And at that time there werent many "Great" military based games. As i got older I played them to further enhance my love for the military but i knew they didnt really represent the true nature of war or how it would be like.

Re: Have video games influenced a decision for you to join the military?
To answer the main question, No, but they have not affected my decision to join the military or not.
I have allways loved guns and war (as in games and movies, and shooting real life guns) but really, i do not think that video games have influenced my decision as all to stay out of the military... at least for now.
I think what influenced me most NOT to join, is the fact that i wish to return to Iceland, and Their is no real military in Iceland, the peace keepers from Iceland that were sent to Iraq were SF police. I would like to go back and join either the coast guard or the police force in iceland... but that is also a dream, if not that, i would wish to be a um.. owning a turrests(cant spell word sorry, you know, when peaple come to visit your country) business.
If nothing else I would like to set up a gun range, and let people shoot weaponry in the mountains of Iceland...
But if their was an army in iceland, Would video games influence me to join it.... Mabey. I know real war is not fun and torture and such..., but i do wish to experience what war is really like. if only for a day, i do wish to know what its like.
Also though, My Father, and his father both were in the USAF, and they both missed all the wars. (grandpa was to young for WW2, to old of later wars, my father was to young for vitnam, then to old for iraq)
Also, I am 17, Turning 18 in October
I wish i could make up my mind on what i wanted to do...

Re: Have video games influenced a decision for you to join the military?
Im 15 and im thinking of joinning the Britsh armed forces but im not fully sure if i want to as not seeing freinds and the possibilty of beaking away from them im still strongly thinking o joining as a officer as i get the grades at school for it. But its either that or Irish coast guard. Ill admit it it Movies such as Saving private ryan and tv show band of brothers have encourged me alot at a very young age and then MOH enforced it alot. But when i played PR it made me think of it alot as it made me get more intressted in the current wars by looking at documentries and wikipeding the taliban. SO yes it has encurged me to think about joiniing the military.

Re: Have video games influenced a decision for you to join the military?
Like every other kid me and my friends would run around with sticks and play the "gun game", and before my teens the military seemed truly awesome. But as I got older I became more of a general political ******. You might call it ethics, but there's no way I can stand the thought of being some mindless pawn in the faux patriotic illusion of my country. Really, if I don't agree with the war being fought, why should I fight in it?

I'll admit it definitely got me thinking about the prospect. If I hadn't been a gamer, I have serious doubts I'd be where I am now.

Re: Have video games influenced a decision for you to join the military?
I have always been interested into joining the military, so when i was drafted they checked my health, and i didnt have good enough eyes. :/
But as a substitute i guess, i play PR.
I enjoy fighting a smart enemy, and usually when your lucky, with smart people
I like barking orders, and gettings stuff done, the cinematic feeling of this game is unrivaled.
The way you can without the game forcing you, make a column, and radio aaaa... So nice
But yeah, PR is pretty much as close as you can get, i want to see how close you guys can get. But always keep a solid base of communication and cooperation, which is what i see is the most important thing in the military, cause if people cant talk to eachother, how are they gonna fight the enemy?

The understanding that sometimes good things can be done for bad reasons? Recognition of the fact that not participating in something not only doesn't stop it from happening, but almost completely removes your ability to influence it for the better? A desire to position yourself to help and protect men like you who are going to be deployed there whether you stay at home and make an empty gesture or not?Pillbox wrote:Really, if I don't agree with the war being fought, why should I fight in it?
