afaik, the PSC (which is a Security contractor thing) can be used in almost any senario

agreed. it can be random too, like caches. could sub spawn here or there.

Ye but how you would decide on where the object gets separated depends very much on the model itself. Just separating the top from the bottom might not be enough as this thing is quite wide and as such, for the LOD1 to come on when your on the underside, you would have to be so many meters away but you could be that many meters away when standing on the top floor, just on one of the far corners and then you would see the LOD1 change under your feet.
With just looking at the r/l design and not actually modelling it etc I would probably go with splitting the model into 8 separate chunks, basically taking every corner, into a different chunk something a little like this a 2x2 Rubiks cube:

Would be the small problem of the huge shaddow left on the sea when the oil rig is not there...

As far as usability, an Oil Rig would be an extremely good addition to both PSC and conventional force maps, if anyone makes one of high enough quality for inclusion in PR it would certainly be greatly welcomed.
