Sounds reasonable to me. Since they don't have a commander they can do what they wish... and because of that... its not going to be the best for the team first but the best for them.
Now you give me command of them? I'd use them as I saw them, risk them when I think needed to. Any one would really. I mean I'd rather attack enemy armor with specialized HAT squads (less risk, stealth, more manuverability) or CAS... but when it comes to attacking? Yeah you bring those big guns up front man!

It also depends on the situation. I would never drive a tank to support INF in an Urban Map (think Karbala). Its way too easy for the enemy to get top armor shots with RPGs and to lure the tank into a mine field.
Playing INF support would work, in theory, with a more total situational awareness. It would also work if there were more people (with more tanks). Then you could have a squad of tanks covering for a good distance while the support tanks are right in the fray (think Kashan). As it is now, its much more likely for Tanks to be taken out by enemy tanks (on Kashan) than to be destroyed via HAT. This is just my experience.
