Re: mumble? i dont get it...
It has directional audio and the player list that it has at the moment illuminates the person who is talking.
If you have good Situational Awareness or can remember well the players in your squad though that's a non-issue.
I'm sure if you're squadless and want to instantly and visually know which room the good guys are in so you can frag the other one that that feature would be very useful though.

its still not as good as seeing who is talking only near you. because you will see everybody who is talking everywhere on the actual list. even people not ingame. this overlay would also make it less confusing for new people trying mumble.

Re: mumble? i dont get it...
If someone is talking near you and you don't recognise their voice, why would knowing their name help?
Also, usually there are only 1-2 people actually talking at once, I have never found it hard to know who the relevant person is. Although in the heat of battle I never even look at the names list - If I don't recognise their voice it means they aren't in my squad - the actual player is irrelevant, what is relevant is what they say.
For instance, if someone shouts 'enemies around the left corner' and I don't know them, I don't care who said it. I just know A) there is something more important around the corner, B) They aren't in my squad and C) they are in the squad next to me, who I ALREADY KNOW IS THERE because I have good SA.
Really if you don't know where friendlies are and you want a head up display to make it simple, you're doing something wrong.
And even basic stereo speakers will tell you instinctively where the voice is coming from (left or right) and the distance. It's not hard from there to instantly deduce where and who it is.

I really don't see why people feel the need to bash mumble, it's an amazing program. And it works perfectly fine!!! It has NEVER crashed on me before, or on the tons of other users that use it also. Mumble requires communications, and it gives you doors that VOIP doesn't. If you ask me, Mumble is NOT overrated, because only so few use it. But on a huge server(bigger than 64, it's ESSENTIAL.) How is it poorly designed? How would you design it? How is the interface atrocious? All it is is a simple tool that you can use to talk to the people around you, and Squad leaders can talk to other squad leaders. How is that bad? Yes, for pilots you can get unlinked if you fly above I believe 100ft(Only flaw I see because I have this problem), but still not everyone is talking anyways, only important stuff is relayed out. Also the tag bug that's been popping up is causing ALOT of teamkills, but guys, that's how it is in real life, look at the uniforms, don't fire first! CHECK YOUR TARGETS!(Yes, Russia and Militia are a little confusing, but that's when you have to look at the AK. Black=Russian, Brown or any other weapon, Militia, simple!)Slick wrote:In my opinion Mumble is overrated in its current form. I use it because it is required on some servers, but mostly I leave it alone and use voip. The software itself is poorly designed and tends to crash, and the interface is atrocious!
And before you go saying that all the hardcore players can use mumble just fine and it gives you uber teamwork and easter bunnies if you use it as a squad, I played in PRT and have played PR for long enough to be entitled to an opinion.
Slick.

Once you've tried acre.... you don't like mumble..Maverick wrote:I really don't see why people feel the need to bash mumble, it's an amazing program. And it works perfectly fine!!! then when you're told why PR:ARMA 2 probably won't have acre... then you become a an-hero... T-T

The OP has/had technical issues and you were not asked for your opinion on mumble. There are other threads on that.Slick wrote:In my opinion Mumble is overrated in its current form. Anyway, I too have technical problems with mumble. Everyone's voice sounds slightly distorted, like it's clipping a little bit. I can also hear people no matter how far away from them I am, even though I joined the mumble server first. Can anyone help me?

Re: mumble? i dont get it...
mumble works for me now. and it is nice when the whole team use it. so i prefer forced mumble server.
after i played some rounds Arma2 withe the ACRE-Mod (see this Video here) i miss a radiosystem like the 343 to get in touch with your squad guys!
sure you could use ingame voip for this - but most of the guys deactivated it...

Whoop whoop, welcome to the fold mate. Trouble is you'll go back to a non mumble server and have an air of superiority..

Re: mumble? i dont get it...
Well, come to NwA server. weekends over 70% of people are on mumble. Its almost MUST if you are in asset squad with multiple vehicles since you can talk to your gunner/driver only.
Its also very easy to tell some blue guy where enemies are.
Use the force, use the mumble.

Re: mumble? i dont get it...
NwA and PRTA (and SISU when it's up) are the only servers I play on. As you say Sharps, NwA isn't always good on enforcing it, but when the admins are on (7-11 British time) it's usually working great, though not always.Doc.Pock wrote:well PRTA enforces it so 100% uses it and the imersion is great![]()
And as Pock said, PRTA is all mumble.

I think you still havent understood what mumble is about.T.A.Sharps wrote: I really don't think I'm being over critical here. I've been joining Mumble labeled servers, only to find a huge inconstancy in its use. So far I only had one SL that was dedicated to not using VOIP.
Mumble is NOT about INTRA squad communication unless your squad is split up
Mumble is about INTER squad communication
the most common situation I find myself using mumble in is talking to vehicles
e.g. an APC on fools road, I want to know what it happening outside, I want to pass on contact information, destination, discussion on routes, instructions to drop ammo etc etc.
I waved down a humvee today using mumble to warn about contact ahead
Right now the only negative about mumble that I find is that it gets spammed a bit, people having chats about whatever when they should be concentrating, or squad leader coms being incredibly busy since there are so many people who haven't got a clue about radio comms IRL.
When people are using mumble to its max potential its just awesome, e.g. the other day my infantry squad was working with another infantry squad I sprinted over to their SL, told him my plan in local (to avoid cluttering radio coms) to flank the enemy and that I wanted him to put fire down etc etc, worked perfectly, allowed me to communicate with another squad leader without every man and his dog hearing, nor without having to set keybinds beforehand.
If we can sort out the spam on mumble, at least on the SL radio then it'll be the best coms BF2 can hope to have imo.

Re: mumble? i dont get it...
Then you have understood the concept wrong, mumble is a backup comm when talking to blue guys, most people agree that squad voip is superior to mumble when inside a squad, mumble shines when atleast trying to get in contact with pilots, apc's, tanks and so on to warn them, to ask for rides, to get some support all kind of shit you would have to type or dispatch a good chunk of your own squad to man those roles without mumble.T.A.Sharps wrote:I'm still not feeling the Mumble.
It seems not many others are either.
I recently have been making an attempt to like mumble, but I can't help thinking it is a waste of time. Mumble just seems like it is a PR-fantasy.
I really don't think I'm being over critical here. I've been joining Mumble labeled servers, only to find a huge inconstancy in its use. So far I only had one SL that was dedicated to not using VOIP.
Pluses are:
+Great sound quality.
+Directional sounds is great.
+Mumble is populated often.
Negatives:
- Too many people around, can't hear orders.
- Takes too long to recognize who is talking.
- You never know who is on Mumble and who isn't.
- Too easy to loose contact with the squad and the SL.
- Too quiet at distance when SHTF, unless you turn down all your sound effects.
- Only certain servers run with Mumble.
- Even on Mumble servers/squads mostly only use Mumble as a back up comm.

I found this sentence quite funny and since this is a war game forum I will put it here. No offense to the french just a good laugh.
"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion. All you do is leave behind a lot of noisy baggage."
