China is widely regarded as the next major military opponent of the US, including by senior PLA officers, mainly because of Taiwan, but also because China is trying to gain regional and even global hegemony. And China participated in a off-and-on border war with the USSR since the 1960s, attempted to invade Taiwan in the late 1950s, invaded Vietnam in the late 70s/early 80s and also financed, advised and trained certain mujaheddin units in the Soviet-Afghani conflict.

Russian backing of North Korea has for the most part not (maybe never) been as strong as Chinese backing.

true although im sure some kids think since its called the Korean war all the fought was North Koreans

Point, I forgot how young some of the members are. At my age, you forget things. :P

Just for clarification, folks, the Chinese directly participated in the Korean War after the North Korean forces were pushed back to the Yalu River. Russia also provided pilots for the new (at that time) MiG-15s.
