Is it possible to work up a second channel per game server? I get tired of sneaking up on the enemy and him hearing me on mumble. Just a shot in the dark.

what if ur next to someone who isn't in ur squad and you want to tell him that there is an enemy at X location?
two unconnected channels per server would be the ideal way of doing this, but on the main PR server it would be very hard to admin. Could server admins (i.e. those with access to the server admin page on this forum) get limited server admin powers to ensure that the right people are in the right channel?

Having 2 channels in real life is not realistic. In the real world. If you speak when close to someone, they will hear you. It don't matter if they are OP4 or not. That's the chance you take with Mumble and trying to chat/talk to somebody that is not in your squad but is on Mumble. My Only niggle about "Mumble" when you do hear the OP4 team players speak. It is always (80% of the time anyway) in English. This means when a MEC player speaks over mumble, I Am not so sure if it is my team or the OP4. Mumble needs a MEC/PLA speak changer. lol. I Know that's not going to happen. But its still would be cool.

*g* I know what you are saying. Would be cool if there was a speech garbler to make your communication hard to tap into. For the time being I suggest we all speak the language of the team we play on while on mumble

I think it would be a huge diservice to all non-english speaking teams If I attempted to say anything behind 'go go go' in their language Spearhead

Or, frag out, "Shukela!"
I wouldn't mind something scarmbling enemy coms, just to make them sound like language, but not recognisable.

though, as said before, it shouldn't be one of the priorities.

The only flaw in your argument is that you can speak quietly to someone standing right next to you in the real world, whereas mumble only has one volume setting. It's not realistic for someone 70m away to hear you wispering. It would be great if we could incorporate a wisper function that would reduce your audio output radius to 5m or 10m, but I'm sure I'm not the 1st person to say that.

Thats part of the point you mean
what's more important?
being able to insult the enemy's dead bodies and they talk back
Orrrrr!
being able to talk to your pilot and tell him where to go etc and get feedback on said request?

problem with hearing enemy is you cant whisper quiet, you always speak loud and Mumble can't "understand" walls, fences etc. its kinda weird when you are sitting in apc and can hear enemy who is 30 meters away behind 2 walls

Mumble is not perfect. It is an ongoing development. This means that they are testing to find the right settings to accommodate all factors involved.

Yeah, if you are afraid of being overheard by the enemy, the chances of actually using mumble drops to way low. After a few rounds, I realized the enemy had been behind my voice trail almost the whole time. I stopped using it. Adminning the people on channels would be another hassle for them. If not adminned, then when the server sends you to the other side, in the case of even balance, the player would have to open the mumble applet, swap channels, and switch back into the game. Until mumble takes the next step in game integration where I can have options of comm with only my team or open communication with all players, I won't use it as much as I would like. The directional speech feature is really nifty and useful between same-side players. Finding a lost man down is a piece of cake for a medic. However, most players aren't using mumble to the point that regular in-game voip is redundant. The chances of your pilot using mumble are too small to consider at the moment. I'm up for a wait until the next (hopefuly with the options worked in) version.

What is the difference between the push to talk button and the alternative push to talk button?

apparently the alt push to talk does the same as force center afaik...
I thought it would be like an alternative normal push to talk button
mapped it to V
got a commander for the first time in ages
talked to him...enemy decided to listen in
fail

Yes, it does exactly the same as "force center position" which is useless in my opinion. There is an option while setting mumble's channel called "altspeak" that can allow or disallow this option (alt-ptt). What sucks is that you can't control "force center position" the same way... I made a request about it to mumble's devs and it seems that it can't be controlled.
The only way to control this would be to set different channels for each squad being all linked together. That way, the "force center position" would only affect the player in your squad while everybody could "speak" normally together. We could also set channels for squad leaders and transport so they could communicate with "force center position" like a radio. Then again, it would be a mess to succeed at having everyone in the right channel.
I'm working on some patterns and channel linking, it would have been so cool to be able to dissociate those two options (alt-ptt and force center position)
Oh well!

Than why do you guys use it for a replacement for Squad Voip? I only use Mumble to talk to the odd blue guy or one of my green-guys when our own comms are filled up by battle chatter. That way you wont have enemy's trailing your voice. Squad VOIP was good enough before, it still is in my oppinion. Mumble is a big fat added bonus that you can talk to the blue's. Like pilots, apcs, grenadiers etc.

You don't get it, with mumble we could do all this a the same time:
1. talk to EVERYONE on the server (including your bue guys

) using normal positioning speak.
2. talk to your squad only when using "force center position" as a radio com
3. have all the squad leaders being able to comunicate together as a radio com.
As I said in my previous post, the fact that "alt-ptt" and "force center position" can't be dissociated would mean that when the squad leaders would communicate on their "radio channel", the squad from the one using this "radio" would hear the communication.
Also, this kind of channel setup on mumble would be a pain because you can't expect people who aren't even capable of following a step by step tutorial to install mumble correctly to reach their right channel
As an example, the mumble server of 10thcommunity has this kind of channel setup

Which servers currently run mumble..? I was thinking about trying it out and seeing if it makes me lag a bit. This is important for me because I'm a transport pilot... :/ Won't use it if it lags, because then I could accidentally murder everyone in my chopper... o_o;
