You just can't interchange VOIP/TS/Vent with Mumble at all. Mumble has demonstrated its worth as a better tool in every way to those programs. Professional TF2 and CSS ladders in Australia are now explicitly using Mumble instead of Vent/TS as its a superior program even without 3D positioning.

I put 1.0 on a pedestal because its earned the right to be there.
This. I never was a fan (nor disliked) Vent or TS or Mumble. All of them granted me additional experience and while Vent and TS were good for the time being, now there is Mumble, with more advanced options wich grant better flexibility.

I wanted a straight objective answer. Maybe i shouldnt of used the word haters, but you got my point anyway. I told my (objective) reasons for liking mumble just above and i probably wont start flaming and shouting by saying that.

My point in that quote was that someone said mumble makes better players, while that's true, the real fact is any voice communication between two different squads will make "better" players.

Some of you are coming across as a bunch of mumble fanboys. Someone questions the fact that a 3rd party program has become mandatory on some servers, and you treat him like he hates mumble. He doesn't hate mumble, he might hate having to install another program, so he questioned it. Tell him why inter-squad communication should be mandatory, not how mumble is such a beautifully programmed piece of software.

It was already said: PR Mumble is the greatest thing ever. There is no other excuse not to run Mumble other then your PC SPECS DONT ALLOW IT.

Personally I don't play on "Non Mumble" servers anymore. If the server is okay with people not using mumble chances are I will rage-quit after a few failed "LOOK OUT ENEMY DIRECTLY BEHIND YOU!" - "Hey can you please revive me? You are on me, hey where are you going?"

I don't even play with my own clan mates if they A) refuse to use mumble or B) if they think they have to cater to non mumblers and spam my ears with Bf2Voip (which sounds horrible, is that only me?)

There are still problems, Forever Alone Sq8 (was this fixed and people just don't know it? xD), SQL's with no discipline in communications (trivial information over ALL SQD channel for example, "Can i get a crate on MY (!!![!!! WHO ARE YOU!?]) position?") and of course grunts that don't get that if they talk local, for example at round start in main everyone has to hear the German, Russian and Pakistani chattering which is very annoying if 32 guys do it.

But that is nothing compared to the advantage we as a Team gain: Communication.

Has Mumble a chapter in the Manual already? I know some new players just don't use the manual, but not everyone is like that. When I started playing PR it was open on my 2nd Monitor like 2 weeks constant. :)

In that light I want to stress that we need PR:MUMBLE FOR CoOp SERVER'S !!!

And this is the thing, mumble is not exactly brand new anymore and is used pretty much on every Server i played on. In my eye's there is no excuse to not have heard, tried and used it anymore. Mumble is not just "some 3rd Party tool for this MOD" - No Mumble is a big and important part of the PR-expierence. I don't want to hate on the OP, but I can see how this rubs people the wrong way.

The People that are annoyed and frustrated that people still rebel against mumble even if it's the best thing since AAS, "just because it is some 3rd party shit olol why do i need this anyway?"

If you own a coop server you can apply for a channel in Server admin section. If you dont see that section forget it.

And I visit Coop servers from time to time when I'm bored and tired of everything else. I dont even see people using bf2 voip, so why mumble then? Its so important for teamwork against AI?

Think not.

But, it is just a 3rd party voice application. Why the sales pitch? Doesn't mumbles performance speak for itself?

It's like if you want to sell someone a fancy luxury car, you have to first establish that they want a new car, before you hype up the product you're selling. People don't care about the features of a product, if they don't think they need it.

My point being, that we'll get a lot more people to jump on the mumble bandwagon if we talk about how useful 3rd party voice applications are, rather than go on and on about how much better mumble is compared to TS/VENT/etc.

they are using it because its much cheaper than ts3 or vent.

how exactly has mumble demonstrated that its a better tool id like to know?
the fact that a pro ladder is using it proves nothing really.
mumble has only demonstrated its the better tool for PR, and not for the rest of the known universe.

Yeah ONLY reason for companies switching to mumble is not cause its awesome, but cause its open source = free to use, while TS3 if being used by commercial entity has to be paid.

You can use TS3/Vent for non commercial purposes. I have license for up to 10 virtual TS3 servers with 512 slots. I cant resell it but I can use it for my needs. And I do.

I would LOVE it if there was a "global" chat feature on Mumble so you the other team can even hear you. Or you cant taunt them ;)

It used to be like that? It was fun but at the same time game disturbing. A nice alternative when playing special events but way too noisy in public matches (people lack the discipline).

And still is. Sure, not all on opposite team can hear you only those close to you. Local chat. If its not changed but I doubt it has.

Wow...technically speaking you sound right...Ill have to test this one though. I was always thinking enemy can hear you if you talk on local in 3d world regardless of channel you're at. Has something to do with server setup too Im just not sure.

Back in the previous mumble version, there was a few servers that had everyone in a single channel, enabling you to hear enemies on local. But they were never really populated for like a year at least before this new mumble came out.
So basically, enemies haven't been able to hear you for years.

@Massive
You totally missed my point, new players, who are told in the manual to first train on CoOp server have no idea how to handle mumble or that it is even used. I'd rather not have new players test their mumble on a 64 live server. :)

Secondly I was under the impression that mumble wouldn't work for some reason for CoOp servers, my bad if i am misinformed here. I got the impression when I talked to CoOp server admins about this. (They wanted mumble too, so if this works, awesome!)

The old Pr Mumble had some issues where you could hear other people. But I think you might be a little confused about this, because in PR:ARMA you can hear the enemy - and it's a feature there. =)

The Pro's (and Con's) of PR:Mumble were discussed here in length, I didn't see the need to add those as well. I also don't get your Point with TS/VENT/etc. - they have no local 3d channel and can't be compared.

It might work but as I said, and I understood you perfectly, people that run mumble server are probably not seeing the valid point of running it on coop servers, where anyone can abuse it and often there are no admins online, so they can spam with music etc...its just a waste of resources if you look at the big picture.
The old Pr Mumble had some issues where you could hear other people. But I think you might be a little confused about this, because in PR:ARMA you can hear the enemy - and it's a feature there. =)
I wouldn't call those issues. Actually I love that feature. Enemy or you, should be aware that enemy can hear you on radio when you're close. If you forget and giveaway your position its your bad, you'll know better next time. Brings some spice to the game. At least I think so. And no I haven't got confused.

On top of that its not technically impossible to set this up even if teams are separated in different channels.

Maybe I mentioned ventrilo at some point but just as an example of something. TS3 has 3D positional audio and it works pretty good. With plugins of course. One would be ACRE for Arma2 :)

No, as the players get assigned to separate teams, which are in different channels, you cannot hear anyone on the opposing team no matter on which frequency he speaks.

Server "tree" looks like that:
Main server channel
|
|
/\
/...\
(Team1)|(Team2)
Squad1|Squad1
Squad2|Squad2
Squad3|Squad3
Squad4|Squad4
Squad5|Squad5
Squad6|Squad6
Squad7|Squad7
.
.
.
It used to be (late, couldnt hear enemies):
Main server channel
|
|
/\
/...\
Team1|Team2
SL Channel|SL Channel
Rest|Rest
(early, single channel, can hear everybody):
Main server channel
|
|
/\
/...\
Team 1 SL Channel|Team 2 SL Channel
\.../
\/
Rest

I think it looks like a christmas tree arnold...

Anyway, Mumble is great. And I think mr Oskar covers it for new players in his training. Maybe if more people started to train new people. We would have more mumble users?

If you are going to kick someone for not having mumble, please remember a lot of the player base dont use it or dont believe in it...
Well, if you are going to go on a server that enforces mumble, please remember to not TK admins and other players and then leave as quickly as you can, and also please remember a lot of the player base don't grief or dont believe in griefing.

Thank you.
