Back in 1954/1956 they didn't have many previous chopper designs to go on for inspiration on how a chopper should look

Those first choppers had
HUGE radial petrolengines in the nose, things got a lot better when
turboshaft came along which were small enough to go on the top between the load area and rotors.
I didn't know it was the French who started them and the first chopper was the
Alouette.

And then they go about it by adding a nose onto the nose and putting some chicken wire over a hole for an air vent
