G1 970 does really seem like the best for that kind of money. (damn, i hate when you buy something new in this market 6 months later something comes out that is 50% better and costs as much...)

About the issues... well, it's still kind of performs the best at that price.(as you can see from happy customers).

Well, I haven't reached 3,5 GB border, so I can't say that I have experienced any issues so far.

Cheers for letting me know about that issue, I'm surprised they haven't been fined for false advertising or something as its not like they even just rounded it up to 4gb, as in many cases they say 4096mb...

But what other alternatives do I have to the 970? I am preprepared to pay more than 300 GBP if its really worth it.

Isn't 970 already more than 300 GBP?

Wait for AMD 3xx series GPU.

Don't buy 3.5GB. lol

GTX 780Ti comes to mind first, but if you look at price/performance ratio gtx970 is still a better deal, given that you dont hit that 3.5 GB mark. What is your monitor setup? Do you use high resolutions? Do you need a card for some professional work or just gaming?

Also R9 290X is similar although much more expensive has more vram ( no glitches like gtx970 ) uses far more power ( 250 W so you need at least 750W PSU ) quite large so you need full tower case, and cost a bit more.

SAPPHIRE 100361-8GVXSR Radeon R9 290X 8GB GDDR5 PCI-E Video Card Tri-X OC Version (UEFI) - Newegg.com

Most people recommend 970, I dont have either of them, so just following what I see or read, so it up to you. If you use 4k display I forgot to add, both should perform similar ( if you dont hit 3.5 GB mark on gtx970 )

Or as our friend above said wait for new AMD series, and see what they got in the shop. Note that waiting like this for new tech will make this topic very long. :)

MaSSive said it all at the 300Pound price point;

first AMD 380 or 380X are supposed to be out by end of Feb for media reviews, by April for consumers.

Cheers, but what other options do I have going outside of the 300 GBP mark?

Only the GTX 980, GTX 780 Ti, and GTX Titan BLACK above 300GBP price point, way way above.

GTX 780 Ti would be the next incremental step up, if you can find one in stock.

Well the r9 290 is within the price level, which is what I have. Worked fine so far. Then again I haven't actually played anything from this year I think. I'm gonna play far cry 4 soon i swear... Downside is obviously not as good a 970.

+kinda cheap
+bretty gud
-power
-heat

900 series do come with some nice new tricks though when it comes to nvidea gameworks.

Also good on power consumption :) I see no reason to go for the 700 series anymore although when it comes to pure performance they are still rather similar.

Just go for the 970 or 980.

Actually I went for 970 even then, when I knew about issue. I don't regret my choice. :)

You can compare value here: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_value.html

Maybe I shouldn't have looked at that website... the GTX 960 is more powerful than my 680 :(

Right guys I'm about 90% sure that the "EVGA GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card" is most likley the right one for me for the time being as the only real downfall it has is 4k gaming and I don't see me getting into that for probably some time yet at best :p

Main thing I need confirming is that it will work with my current system specs fine, which are as per the OP:

I'm also going to look into "Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming 4GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card" a little more to ensure that isn't a better deal but I don't think it will be since the only real difference that might win it for me is noise levels but with the EVGA's Fans turning off in idle I doubt that will be the case.

Cheers! :D

Amen to that. I hope it serves you well.

Just to add that this > http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_value.html < is not "which gpu is the best" kind of comparison, more like "bang for the buck" statistical overview, and you should not bother with it.

For example, GTX 960 can not be in any way "better" than GTX 680. Not in a million light years. Its newer, its cheaper, it uses less power, but in all other performance charts 680 beats the **** out of it. You cant really compare tech like that. 680 is 2012 released tech, while 690 is still fresh under the hammer - 2015 released. So its like mixing apples and oranges.

Just for refence here are the numbers

Yep, realised that but is still pretty good chart for if your trying to get the most out of your money :)

They do a bunch of other benchmark stats etc here which I think Steeps might be referring too?

Correct.

The other references for a "quick chart" type are
tom's hardware heirarchy guide Best Graphics Cards for the Money: February 2015
and
notebookcheck.net Laptop Video Graphics Cards - Benchmark List
Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List - NotebookCheck.net Tech
(in the filters you can remove the mobile GPUs and just list the desktop GPUs )

and in the past there was gpureview.com , but the website has been mostly abandoned, which is a shame. They had a chart of every manufacturers model of every graphic card model, with lists of base frequencies in the chart. Was a great quick reference.
