I have a question about the seats in the trucks cargo bay. In real life they look like this:

So right now I am modeling them like that, but would this even work in game? I mean, wouldnt it conflict to much with the kit geoms? So should I actually model this, or should I just make a simple bench?

Backpacks from kits always clip through, if that's what you mean. I'd model it like it is irl. Unless the soldiers can't sit properly and/or their legs clip through the outside of the truck obviously.

Thats actually what I was trying to say. Especially with the little tube frames in between the seats I think it might look rather ugly because their arms and or body may clip through them. I guess I will not model those.

By the way, what should be an acceptable height for the benches, at least 40 centimeter I suppose?

soldiers clipping slightly through your seats wont be that noticeable especially because the players are not facing each other as on other trucks.

just do your model, the person that will code it will take care of the animations etc

Update


Right now I am working on getting the 3rd Person model done. As far as I know all the details are pretty much there now, but I still have to weld and cut away some vertexes to further optimize this model before starting on the interior model. Also the existing interior details will have to be removed, but I will do that when I have the 1st Person model done I guess.

Nice work but 13k tris is far too much for a truck and I doubt its going to come down that much just from removing the interior details you've already added. You really want to aim at something around 8k tris for a truck, although 10k would just about be acceptable but still, very high...

There are quite a few areas you can optimize on like those headrest sides don't need anything like as many sides to its curve as you have, the exhaust tubes are very round, as are all the other tubes, can all have much fewer sides without the player really noticing it etc. Just keep on going around your vehicle asking yourself dose this thing really need that much detail?

Rhino, okay. I am already getting some ideas on how to achieve that. Especially the bumper rack could do with far less detail I believe. Also the top frame, which has six sides, and some other high poly details.

I completely removed the front bumper and top cargo-bay frame and modeled them again. I also removed some other unnecessary details and optimized the model furthermore, saving a total of 2238 triangles.

I am not there yet though, but I really do think I will get the 3rd person models LOD_0 around 10.000 tri's or less.

Some progres,


I am still working on getting everything as optimized as possible, but I am kinda running out of un-optimized parts so I do not think I will be able to lower the tri count much more then this. Eventually the LOD_0 will probably end up somewhere in between 9500 - 10.000 tri's I guess, but maybe I am being to negative right now. We will see... :wink:

It has been a while since I last posted progress as some of you may have noticed. The main reason for that is that I bought myself a new (game)laptop which I am currently trying to get to the highest level of performance possible. I also installed 3DS MAX 9, but I am having this really annoying bug:

Does anyone know how to solve this bug? It really makes it impossible for me to model anything on my laptop so I hope someone has a fix for this.

Some tech-info



- Windows 8.1
- 64 bit (have a 32-bit 3DS MAX 9 version though)
- Intel i7 4720 HQ 2.6 GHz (3.6 on turbo mode)
- AMD Radeon M265X
- 8GB RAM

I've tried everything on the web and nothing works. It's a windows 8 (8.1 to be specific I think?) issue. Really sucks when it comes to UVing, makes it take twice as long (as if it Isn't bad enough already).

Not sure if anyone has found a fix or if one is possible. I've tried drivers, Max updates, sacrificing my first born, with no luck.
