I agree with making it a certain type of artilery strike effect, it would be the easiest as we already have been able to make Mortar and JDAM strikes the same way. It would end up being a mixed strike of HE Art shell, heavy caliber rounds and miniguns I guess.
Also, at some extent, would it be possible to make it visible like the UAV object so it can be shot down if seen on clear sky maps?
The only major problem I see with that is that while IRL they fire accurately at identified hostile targets because they are manned, ingame it would be somewhat random firing all over a defined area wich is a bit silly if you ask me lol.

But adding it in as a artillery option is a good idea. We wold have to talk about different rounds coming down as the AC-130 has...three different types?
yes 3 types Gau-12(25mm), M2A1 Bofors(40mm)and last but not least a M102 howitzer(105mm)
a suggesgion would be to have the 25mm available every 10 mins then every 20 mins the 40mm so either 15 or 20 mins straight after the 25mm then every 30 minsthe 105mm(arty strike) 25 or 30 mins straight after the 40mm
or just a 2-3 min prolonged burst of all the weapons in random spots all over the target area, available every 30 or 60 mins
that is just my suggestion idk how all the coding works so its up to you devs to do the stuff u do and if it cant be done then tough we can live with out iti mean do we realy need this though it would be a neat thing to have.

there was a BF2 map that actually did have an AC130 on it (this is going back a couple years). I flew it around and fired the howie on it a couple times. The problem is that even on a massive map like kashan, the plane is simply too big and slow to fly effectivly. Not to mention it took about 4 people to man all the guns on it. It was a nice toy, and effective, but easy to counter-act with minimal AA assets. You simply cannot fly high enough to realisticly use it.

Soon to be two different types. The GAU-12 and Bofors are being replaced by two Bushmaster II 30mm cannons (firing the same round as the GAU-8 Avenger on the A-10) on the AC-130U Spooky and will eventually replace the two Vulcans and the Bofors on the AC-130H Spectre.

AC-130 have a reduced role in war nowadays, i've talked to a few guys that came off our 06 tour, and they saw them a few times, but every since that one got shot down in 91 the americans have pretty much been only flying them in the night time for CAS roles. now i could be wrong but last i heard it was SOP that they were only allowed to fly in a combat role during night time.

ahh ok cool
is the Bushmaster II a rotary barrel or single barrel?
they took the 20mm Vulcans off ages ago back in the late 80's i think and they only had 3 weapons (the ones i stated)
and isnt the Bofors a glorified Grenade launcher been 40mm and all?

Sounds pretty cool. Although If you want one person flying, one operating each gun, (If you want an AC-130 Spectre for example) You're going to have to have 9 people on board. That would be pretty awesome.
It would have upsides and downsides too.
+ Massive Gunpower
+ Awesome against anything on the ground
+ Teamwork and Coordination a must
- Sitting duck if crappy pilot
- Large target for AA
- Easily shot down by MiG's etc.
--------------------
Good idea. Very balanced actually.

Would need massive respawn time too.
But great idea, I'd like to see it in PR.

It's not gonna happen though I'm afraid. As said before close support variants are only really used at night time now, plus I wouldn't imagine they'd dream of sending one out anywhere near a place where hostile jets might be present, so it wouldn't fit maps like Kashan at all on top of all the other reasons given.
