I'd try model the airport kind of after the Basrah one, but instead of the air terminal a big hangar with humvees in it.
And i still have my DCU skins if you still want to use it

I am working on a similar map! Although it is not entirely realistic, cause all i had to base it was the BHD game and the movie, but it looks good enough.
Does the city look too developed?

Well, thanks marcoelnk, mr. march 2007, for the incredibly constructive criticism. You must be a godsend to every mod you follow. Please, in the future, dont comment on anything i do, preferably anything I read.
Do you realize this is my first attempt at mapping anything for bf2?
that i have little understanding of the bf2 editor?
that i maybe spent about 3 hours on all that? (much of which was learning the workings of the editor)
that im sure a fully developed level takes many many more hours than three?
f*ck off.
I dont mind you saying it sucks, but help me out... like the guy who said the airport was wrong, he offered suggestions, im thankful, really.
I'll have to take a look and maybe some creens of al basrahs airport for some ideas. Im having toruble finding objects though... like the big hanger i keep hearing about... all i found were the smaller ones... help? PM me or post in here...
awesome DYE_Slayer, I see you have a road in there... ummm.. could you PM me how you got roads working? or once again, post it in here? I cant seem to get the things(what are they called? not nodes...) to connect.... a city doesnt look complete without it... It might be a bit overdeveloped, i mean, it was a time of great civil war, faction fighting... some slums and markets and stuff... some bigger buildings im sure, but im trying to leave the Olympic Hotel as the largest building in my map... something the US can look out and say "ok, olympic hotel is there, squad 3 should be about...here!" id like that.... *sigh*
Rambo... if I were to add in the DCU skins, do they affect anything? punkbuster or whatnot? or is it ok if it is in the level coding... id need help getting it in and working (im a newb..or is it n00b?)...
Im gonna work some now... its 1am, but im home now... maybe get a little more added so marcoelnk can comment again.
Thanks all for commenting... im on 56k at where I am now... taking the pc elsewhere tomorrow... Ive worked some on the airport, but im gonna work on it now and post pics when im on faster internet to upload to photobucket...
Peace,
Okita

Skins can be incorporated to the specific map, so if wouldn't conflict with anything.
And Ecko is making custom statics, maybe an Olympic hotel?

Olympic Hotel (I think)

Sigh, dont worry, one step ahead of you. I deleted it. I figured if I tried to do new things, everyone would love me... turns out... I just needed to learn to love myself...
on a side note... maybe get some updates in a few. I posted on Rambos suggested thread and asked for the Olympic, and someone had already asked for buildings with walls on the roofs (to shoot over) So i think thatd work really nice in this level...

Here's a little concept thing of what i think the airport should look something like... I just compressed some things from the real one and Black Hawk Down (but i couldn't fit the control tower, so i just stuck somewhere out of the way)
Hope this helps!
(I don't know if you can see it, but there's a dirt barrier all around, like in Basrah)
(and durn, it's too light, but the yellow rectangle is a support humvee)

by the way, i would a transport little bird and an ah little bird to the arsenal, just for more realism and precision incursions, as well as air support.
also, make sure the lanes are wide enough for black hawk landings!, remember, no fast roping!

the roofs should also be clear of rubbish, if at all possible get some large buildings with flat roofs.

working on the roofs thing, and it being wide enough. mainly im trying to leave Halwadig road as wide as possible for the blackhawks. The target building might have room for a little bird on top, but its on you can get to the roof from the stairs, so thats good. (I hear it was a cafe or something, so i put 2 tables and some chairs on the top, but those can go if needed...)
Theres a few next to it that are flat. But ill keep that in mind. Thanks!
And yes, AH-6s and MH-6s were always in the plan. I was thinking 2 AH-6s, 2 MH-6s, 4 Blackhawks(maybe one or two more? I dont want a ton of chainguns though... that could get crazy for the insurgents...) And an undecided amount of humvees... but there will be a good amount.
With the onset of .6, i think heavy weaponry wont be as effective with the addition of the civilian class... and it will play nicely into the mogadishu setting.
I like your airport, Ill try for that. I actually already added a dirt/sandbag wall around the base. Actually, it was those concrete cylinders ... you know, where you have to jump on one row, and then on top...anyway... those...
Ill get some pics up when i feel some progress has been made.

Hows about 2 AH-6s 3 MH-6s 5 B-hawks this map would be so f*cking sweet. Especially if we all had Choc Chip camo
Again good job

why do you start with such a difficult map for your first map?????
make some test-maps first and you will learn a lot instead of asking every f+++bit of the editor....

sorry for swearing...but i see no sence in making a real bhd map which doesnt look good without knowing the editor properly....im just warning you...if you notice that the map doesnt look good when you play it ther is nothing more frustrating than having to start again because tere are too many things ehich were done wrong....make some small test maps first!!!!
sorry for misbehaving marco

its fine. it was just an annoying earlier post with no explanation. thanks for clarifying.
why you ask? I'm on summer break, little to nothing to do, and plenty of time. The way I figure it, even if I can't get all of the actual workings of the map (spawn points, lightmapping, spawnables, etc.) at least I will be learning things. Hell, I'm sure it won't be PR worthy, but maybe someone with a little time would want to pick it up and fine tune it...
In all honesty, I'm sure it'll come out to be pretty close to Al Basrah, but with less points (which might change things)
Thanks for clarifying. And if anybody reading this is annoyed by my asking for help, please, by all means, feel free to refuse it at ANY time. : )
I still dont see how you can just say it doesnt look good... me having put little of the total time needed for a map... but ok.

so..heh heh... due to my being a total idiot, i am going to restart the map.
theres nothing i can do to save it. my PR folder (and the levels area where the map was saved) was deleted.
BUT, in all honesty, that's good. I needed to restart, and this just kind of forces me to do what I needed. I started over, and I am now looking at Rhino's Setting up the BF2 Editor for PR maps. (I hadnt before, the thought hadnt occurred to me)
SO, now I have ALL the files extracted and I should be bale to get that Cargo plane and Hanger and all that cool stuff into the map as originally planned.
Lifes full of these little things where you just have to slap yourself in the face, take a breath, and take off running again.
Final words:
restarting, retexturing, might be a lil' bit before... new screens are up. This time, I'll start work on the airfield so I can get maybe a few good pics of just one really good area.
*sigh*

***UPDATE***
amazing news.
ok, scratch that earlier post about losing it. apparently, i out-idioted myself.
When i lost my pr folder, I couldnt find the map. but, i craftily had started it in the bf2 mods folder of levels... heh heh.
so, new update. i have the original of what I had up to thinking I had lost it. It is now in my pr_edit folder for working in the editor, along with all the objects folders extracted... And now that I have all the files properly extraxed, I am hoping that roads, undergrowth, and objects i want are working properly.
yay.
sorry to everyone for constantly thinking things are one thing, and then having them turn out to be the next. hopefully all is well. hopefully.

Actually, in real life the Rangers and delta boys used DCU, as seen in Black Hawk Down.

argg... one thing I cant seem to find (i put in the cargo plane, and the terminal) but I cant find the big hanger the boxy one... any one have a directory listing of it? ive checked the statics folders, military...all that i can think of... I think i remember something bigger and better from alBasrah for a hanger... not the round half circle ones I have in now...
