The problem isn't bailing pilots - it's exploding helicopters.

The statistics: downed helicopters caused only 5% of Coalition fatalities up to September 17, 2006, and are almost certainly around 10% today. (Link)

This should be reflected in PR, to some degree.

My point is that not every anti-helicopter attack or helo crash is fatal IRL - in PR, every chopper that gets hit by a legitimate target or crashes into an inanimate object dies completely, along with all inside.

There needs to be a higher chance for failure of control surfaces on aircraft than for total destruction of the aircraft - unless total destruction is realistic (AA missiles?). If it's possible, crashes should also cause both equipment failure and passenger health loss, but shouldn't kill everyone inside and destroy the chopper unless it's above a certain velocity on impact.

I know that making certain status affects such as mobilized happen due to shot placement, but is it possible to make it so that if a Helo is hit and goes down to 10% or some other arbitrary number, it automatically goes to engine fail?

Definitely - that's how the current control failure system works. When the vehicle reaches X amount of damage, X effect occurs - in our case, engine or rudder failure.

It should be something like 70% failures/semi-fatal crashes and 30% complete explosions. I wouldn't mind a very small chance of random engine failure, but I need to be careful what I wish for. I might just get it.

I'd rather have something like 99 percent failures that you could eject from, simply because on the rare occasions rescue pilot missions do come up, they tend to be loads of fun.

Does anyone have a better idea of the chances of that happening in the real world? How often are pilots able to escape from wrecks destroyed by modern AA or sustained .50 cal? How often are passengers injured by either weapons fire or survivable impacts?

DavidP, I agree with the first two, but the third one and the conclusion are fairly distasteful.

Besides, pissing off a DEV probably isn't a good idea.

IRL you have a crew. in USMC you have two pilots (pilot, copilot) and two enlisted personnel (crewchief, AO (ariel observer)) both of which man the guns (MG) and watch all sections of the plane and look for mechanical problems. in addition you will have 4 m16s under the troop seats, and each crew member has a pistol (that is changing to M4). you will also have an extra MG under the troop seats in case the other ones fail. at least, thats what we had in iraq in our ch46e's.

aa, kinda depends on where your hit. seeing that they are attracted to heat (engines) you usually take the hit and then have a hard landing. since all usmc helos have two engines survivabilty is pretty good, unless you take multiple hits. but of course you could still bang your head, break you neck or break you legs, you get the idea. 50 cal would have to hit hydraulic lines or flight controls to cause the hyd system to bleed out or have one of the flight controls fail. same thing for engines, which have armor in most helos. ive seen many a 46, 53, huey come back from troop inserts with bullet holes in them that just when straight through the skin of the A/C. or hit rotor blades that just made the ride a little rough. point is you arent just going to explode.

if any changes to be made to pilot kit, it would be to remove the pistol.

I'm sorry I dont believe anymore of their Bullshit. Infact I'm tired of all this PR fanboyism that exists. Honestly you people need to Re-The-Fuck-Lax! No wonder wumwuts and others grief you. You take things too seriously then wonder why someone would want to do what he does.

You know what? Maybe I'll join them? And get some fun out this Mod while I still can. Or maybe I'll forget about this Insignificant Little shit that is PR and enjoy my Life. Either way I win.

Warning given. Ease up on the attitude.

You seem to be the only one getting worked up about this. Spurned fanboyism perhaps?

A potential waste of 3 more helicopters just to get 1 guy.Spawn time (for the pilots) should be at least as long as collaborator's.Assuming the pilot survived and the enemy
is looking for him, well that's what artillery is for -call in when they're closing in on you and die like a man

The problem with the whole issue, of which there was a similar thread about a while back, is that there isn't any feasible way of making pilots a valued asset to be worth saving. The only thing that can be done is to make the pilot kit limited with a long respawn, which unfortunately the PR community isn't mature enough to deal with it seems at the moment.

Pilots don't need to be modified themselves to be part of some stupid 'Save the Pilot' mini-game. The possibility of their survival right now is so low, this entire thread is pointless without mentioning those helicopter explosions.
