I wasn't offended, just caught off guard. That's one of those comments where if you and I were actually speaking, I would say "ok" and proceed to walk away in bewilderment.

Make the phone slightly scratched around the edges maybe and a bit less... well 2D to be honest, it looks really flat.

The artillery tex is good but could use a couple of "rings" near the base. For the phone why not use the phone tex that's currently used with the IED pipebombs?

Better. Now the phone needs to be worked on. Make it more scratched and over all just less smooth, if you know what i mean.

Add some depth to the phone, maybe bevel down the casing around the keys and screen. Also bevel the keys up.

Right, keep it up. Things you need to look at -

1. Put in artificial lighting in the diffuse map (which is the colour texture), you can't rely on the game engine to determine all your lighting, hence you have to figure out by trial and error the parts that are always in shadow (or most in shadow) and darken those areas. Places like under the phone, the area where the phone and wires touch the shell etc.

2. Edge highlights and scratches need to be placed around places of exposure, like the corners of the phone and the tips of the shell. Don't go overboard and coat the whole thing with scratch brushes (cause that's the noob way of texturing ;) ) but instead be maticulous about painting and continually place down scratches and pulling them back till you get the desired effect.

Also don't forget to make a specular and bump map.

Thats a great suggestion! Thats probably what i was missing and why i thought it looked smooth.

Wow, I can't even remember doing anything maticulous before high school (at which time I decided my general policy would there by become "good enough"). I'll try, but I don't know.
Anyway, with all this work I felt like actually getting to use my new toy. So, for one, here's the new phone and some perspective shots. Obviously, this new phone is temporary until I make use of chuc's advise about sratches etc. Also, I'm not really wanting to do the rings around the bottom of the shell because those are more characteristic of new and moderately used shell and I want to make this shell look like I has been burried for a month.

Also, I decided to test it out on some British vehicles so you can an idea of this thing's potential.
Subject A - Support Truck placed about 10 meters from the IED

Result: Totally destroyed

Subject B - Land Rover placed about 15 meters from the IED

Result: Totally destroyed

Subject C - APC placed about 20 meters from IED

Result - APC is left emitting light grey smoke.

Subject D - APC placed about 8 meters from IED

Result - APC is left emitting dark grey smoke.

Summary - Avoid at all costs, if you're in a tank or APC definately retreat in a hurry if your vehicle is consumed by the intial explosion (as in Subject D).

And in general, does is the current state of the model good for the low poly version?
I'm making a high poly version now with a 15 (or 18, I forgot) sided shell figure. Also, on the high poly I modified some the phone's vertexes so it looks smoother and less boxy. I would post a picture of it, but I'm having quite the time trying to grab just the right vertexes when uvw mapping the phone. If I grab too many I'll be making the top and smooth part look like the top is supposed to look, but if I grab to few I just end up with a triangle. I'll keep trying.

I agree, it is good for a low poly LOD, you can do wonders with the texture, I know it.

Yeah, I've seen it done before. Thanks for reminding me about the bump maps, totally forgot.
Anyway, I got the phone done (figures right after I complain about it, I figure it out myself). However, now with the new export, I have some really odd animations (including slapping yourself across the face when running, that'll hurt), but I just need to rotate the model before exporting.

Also, chuc. With the lighting, what do I do for that - use photoshop lighting affects or change general lightness/darkness of image area with photoshop. Also, besides the edges of the phone, where else do you think there should be scratches?
So, lod 0 (ie. only one for 1p and one of two for 3rd p) are the high poly model, while the lod1 (for 3p only) is the most recent of the old models.
Also, while starring at the phone - does anyone else agree I should take out the circular thing and just have indentations in the standard plastic for the hearing part?

Put a shadow between the phone and the shell, that's pretty much the crux of it.

I still think you should add those rings. Would look so much better. And the bottom could be a bit more flat. Here's some good images I took ones. A bit rusty, but just for reference what those rings and the bottom should look like IMO.

Ha, the purple camo (the guy's leg). Anway, I don't know. I might do it.
The bottom of the shell actually is slanted due to someone's request. The back 1/8 kind of tightens up, someone requested it, I'll take it out if you want.
Here's my first attempt at use/abuse on the phone -

Basically, I put some stuff on the back/sides and some more stuff right near the clear button and the blue bar button.
Good start?

I'll probably add the rings, but I don't know how to do it well. I tried just excising a piece of the texture and then applying the little photoshop affects that indent/exdent (I made a word, oh well, I'm tired). Anway, I'm gonna try and get at least 6 hours of sleep as good bye for now.

i'm not sure, but i think that if this was a 105mm shell, hotwired to explode, that it would pretty much destory an APC or tank within 15 meters.

otherwise i think it looks great and should be a fresh addition to the game.

And on topic: the phone starts looking much better. Just add some shadowing to the shell to make it look more round. Now the duct tape starts looking flat, maybe add some shadowing to that too. Also a slight weave texture (there's a weave brush in one of the brush sets I sent you)
