Processor doesn't really mean much in games. It's all about the GPU.
Exactly, Benchmarks have proven that, for example,
Running a 5870, with
i7 920,
v
Running a 5870 with a
Phenom II x4 965,
There is about
1/2 frames difference in games such as Crysis, probably the most graphically stressing game ever released. Still, the average frame rate was like mid forties and both the CPU's were overclocked at around 3.8/4.00hz.. this proves that current FPS games do not utlize the CPU enough to warrant a £140 more expensive Motherboard, RAM and CPU combo over a AMD Phenom II x4 965 with 4gigs of DDR3 1333mhz RAM and a Asus Mobo.
I7 is fantastic for Video encoding and heavy CPU practises... but it's entirely unessassary for gaming.

I was thinking on getting a Intel Core i7-860 its a bit cheaper but still is a tiny bit faster then the i7-920.

All I care about is having a PC that performs the way it should and for PR the benchmark for me has always been falluja. I've gone through 4 PC's now in 3 years and not once have I been able to run the game as well as people with similar or even lower spec PC's claim to be running it and it's doing my head in to be honest.
Now, with the i7 920/260GTX/6gb RAM, I have a PC that evidently should run Falluja at 100FPS all the time but in my case the average is around 80fps, dropping to 60 at the lowest. Now, a difference of 40FPS is huge and I've run out of ideas what I could try to find that missing performance.

Please take a screenshot of this view in a populated server with your FPS showing. It's just outside the US base looking south:

4 GB PC4200 DDR2 (533 MHz) < 6 GB PC12800 DDR3 (1600 MHz)
That memory is the biggest difference. bf2 uses alot bandwidth but not the cpu so much as there is no AI and the model complexity is not great
I shall have to try the 8AA thing. Having enough graphics memory helps, etc

Actually, processors DO count, a lot, but not in BF2 which can't benefit from multiple cores. BF2 is more dependent on pure clock frequency.
If you read processor benchmarks closely enough, you should notice how differently processors perform at very high resolutions with AA and AF on.
