If it is possible to show these boxes at all times when in the jet, it would allow for both pilots to receive the benefit of these quasi-opponent-indicators.
It is possible.

Doing some digging I've found that at least the Cobra's 30mm to be considered somewhat ineffective at ranges of 1500m. The reason cited being velocity slowdown hindering the munitions to detonate on impact.
For IFVs it appears that the distance of effectiveness seems larger being a total of 2000m on average.

We did some BVR firing in kashan desert today with apaches, i was very accurate, thanks to our good spotter Walsh, if you want a spotter just search for the guy named USMCLcplWalsh
P.S: HAT missile missed our chopper by 1 pixel!!! we got a pic of it taken in BR, so if anyone wants it, just PM me.

HOWEVER! I do have a problem with the magic attack marker, we have a view distance we cannot avoid that, BVR can not be adequately avoided either, so let it be a teamwork feature, let it be less effective than if you were on target visually, let it be less effective than if you were on target visually with a laser on the marker.
This is just another reason to remove 3d markers in the game world, and keep them on the minimap only.
I don't accept the RL ranges arguement because we don't have radar, we don't have javelins, we don't have etc etc.
We are in a minature version of reality, we have to accept the technical limitations of BF2.
in this instance we should be looking at what gives the best gameplay, and I think BVR with a spotter is great gameplay, magic marker BVR is not.
What he said.... seriously i am not trying to kiss anyone's arse here but that's well said and after reading the entire thread, this post makes the most sense to me. i would support it, if only however there was a better way for infantry ect: to get contact bearings.

I agree with Rudd, BRV is great, i really appreciate it when we have a .50 cal gunner on a hmmvw or landy giving the enemy hell whilst being guided by a spotter, but once that marker is in place, it is all too easy to tear apart enemy positions without having to receive enemy fire.

BVR is king. AA and infantry honestly stand no chance and as a rule of thumb unless it needs to be hellfire'd then BVR must be done.
I lase often for Falcon and fall.wa on Muttrah and we use BVR all the time. Usually begins with getting into position > BVR'ing the AA/TOWs, then coming in for a hit on whatever the objective is.
I think its a perfectly legitimate tactic. Fall got 30/51 kills from BVR alone.

Am I the only one who finds it a bit ridiculous that the cannon has more range then the Hellfire, and is probably infinitely more effective?

Mistake...
The problem is the 3d marker system.

I have problem when trying to shoot BVR because i have no idea where to aim... below the 3d corsshair... over it... or inside it...

BVR end effects will solve the dropping like flies issue, but I'm not on board for this "get rid of markers" solution because in real life you don't have a curtain at 1000m.

The problem is the view distance, and the lack of a working stabilization system. Markers are somewhat accurate, in real life they get WP rockets and grenades.

Larger view distances = Lag (note the current performance issues we have already)
Stabilization = Not possible (we'd gladly implement it if we could)
I don't think a real FAC, which we have several of on our team, would see a comparison between WP that must be launched from a weapons system and a 3D overlay that can be placed anywhere, as often as one wishes, which instantly relays exact enemy positions with a "shoot here" marker. The 3D marker system needs to be replaced by a 2D one that gives direction only imo. Though it won't be changed for 0.95.
But don't worry, Hunter and all you other CAS maniacs. There are features en route that will shake the very foundation of your PR experience. In a good way, of course....and they
will be in 0.95
