It is more fun to have a squad, that you can talk to easily and effective, but i don´t have a problem with english speakers in my german squad - as long as i can understand them. Native Englishspeakers should keep in mind, that most others have learned some kind of Oxford-Schoolbook-english and won´t automatically understand you, when you bring in your local slang. So if you join a squad, speak loud and clear.
Another thing i experienced is, that many englishspeakers join in a ger-voip squad, just to get a special kit and then go solo, which doesn´t make much sense for the SL.

The funny thing with english squads is, that they seem to be more serious ingame and adapt to a military language..makes it quite funny, too

That's something I've also experienced:
I joined a whole 6 man squad talking English on a German server, language was calmed, short and good to understand - after a while every member had some pauses while talking where he/she searched for the correct English translated word he/she had in mind and then you heard some German mumbling in the background.
So after half of the round I asked in German "Kommt aus diesem Squad eigentlich irgendjemand hier nicht aus Deutschland?" [Is anyone of this squad not from germany?].
The answer was: No
We all came from Germany, were on a German server but talked English half of the round although it wasn't necessary - which is good in one way but we also had some fighting and searching for words while talking.

So the abstract of this story is:
1) Talking english is good but sometimes non-native speakers have to find some words to express something they have in mind --> this can last some seconds and therefore vital time-critical information can get lost/can come to late.
2) The voices were calm and silent as long as we talked English as everyone had to concentrate on what he/she says and on what the others were talking - also the information was very concentrated and not bloated with any non-necessary information.
3) As soon as we recognized that everyone in squad was a German (and therefore talked German) the sound was going loud, you could hear lots of swearing, useless stories everywhere

Conclusion: English (if it's not your mother-tongue) mostly is shorter and more precise, also a more calmed atmosphere which is very helpful for concentrating on the action...

-I usually speak English to Norwegains as my vocabulary is far more extensive(at least in the military slang department). I also use a lot of obscure dialect-specific words if speaking in Norwegian so it's a lot easier to understand me if I speak Norwegian.

I demand Scouse become the official PR language !

If i open up a squad i name it normaly Inf or Tank if i dont have enough players from own clan. So everyone can join - if we are only germans - we speak it of course. if some english speaking player join i told my squad to speak english - i give my orders in english and thats it. If some of germans coud not understand it - they stick in german and i give all important orders in german and english. As long the SL speaks both languages its not a problem to play together.

Just had a typical worst case scenario...

I joined a game on the 10th server, the round just started and I opened up the squadmenu.
This is what I found:



5 out of 7 squads were German-squads.
The other 2 were not really doing anything. The only squad that talked English to me was the Mumble squad, but they kept kicking me because I don't have Mumble (WTF IS MUMBLE???).

I decided to switch sides...but on the other side, it was this...



I disconnected...

well, 10th is a german server, you have to expect that there.

And you don't know mumble?

Its a VoIP program, similiar to teamspeak, but it knows your position ingame - the voice of the other users come from the direction they're standing relative to yours. Rules.

Yeah, join a german server you have to expect them to be speaking german really.

1. I've played on 10th more then once, and there used to be only 1 german squad.

2. Internship, been a while since I played PR. But Mumble looks kinda fail in my opinion.

Mumble is cool actually, however if not pubbing then you need 2 VoIP programs and the BF2 VoIP too. And that sucks.

Well, let me provide my opinion on this subject. I sometimes play on Euro or South American servers and have even played in squads where the other players did not speak English and was able to follow my SL orders and communicate well enough. I actually like to listen to guys with accents; girls really like guys with foreign accents no matter where they are from. I don't think there should be any "English Requirement" on any servers and if a guy joins my squad that doesn't speak English we just get our point across however we can and usually do just fine.

Well my favourite was playing with a spanish squad in spanish, quite different.

Took me a while to work out when they said "lets put an egg down over here".

Have yet to play with some Australians though.

I have no problem at all, there's alot of international students that go to my local uni and I'm used to it, also there's generally alot of immigrants around my area anyway so I can understand English spoken it lots of different accents with lots of different hints of their mother tongue, there's nothing cuter then Polish lasses talking English either I find alot of non-native speakers of English much easier to understand then some Bangladeshi descendant wannabe gangster youth, or a "Ere, y'what, I'm British as fook!" moronic, racist, scally white kid from round here anyway.

Anyway, I generally will talk English when I venture into non-Brit Euro servers, but I don't really go for joining a FR VoIP squad and imposing my language on them. I'll admit that I use English still on the team chat (which most Euro servers seem to allow, although there's plenty that say you HAVE to use English), but that's cos that's all I can really do to help teamwork on a teamwide basis.
