Cannot reset keys, cd-less bf2 install inquiry

I have a strictly PR issue and a BF2 inquiry. I just reinstalled BF2, patches, full install of PR 0.96. Launches fine. The only problem is that I cannot reset my crouch key. When I do, the desired key assignment appears in the controls menu, but does not respond in game. Strangely enough, the default left-CTRL key does still work as the crouch key, although this is not reflected in the controls menu. I tried an alternate key assignment also, to no avail. I don't seem to be having this problem with any other keys.
During this recent installation, I discovered a considerable difficulty with my old BF2 disks. They are worn. Is there any way to install BF2, legally, without using my disks, but using my CD key?
XP Pro SP2, ATI X800, 1GB RAM, 3.2 GHz

You might be able to register your BF2 with EA and EA Download Manager. This
might enable you to be able to download and install with out disks but rather from EADM download. (I am really not sure if EADM supports that).
Borrowing the disks from a friend or renting, then installing using your CD-key would also technically work.
I am definitly no legal expert but if you believe what wikipedia writes you seem to be allowed to do a back-up copy (that is if the disks still work at all).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ripping wrote:"while it may well be fair use for an individual consumer to store a backup copy of a personally owned DVD on that individual's computer, a federal law has nonetheless made it illegal to manufacture or traffic in a device or tool that permits a consumer to make such copies."[3] This case made clear that manufacturing and distribution of circumvention tools was illegal,
but fair use of those tools was not.

Yes, download back-up .isos, that usually means torrenting it. Finding a non-cracked version will prove hard but not unpossible. Believe it or not there are a few people out there that create back-ups online for people to download and save.. not hack and crack. Anyways, you can use emulation software such as Daemon tools to mount the image, allowing you to install the game. i do that with all my games and have it burned to a spare disk just in case. If you are willing to torrent it.. i am willing to give you a link to my private server for the back-up however this will be slower has i only have 5mb/s up.
