.97 patch catastrophe, need help, withdrawal from PR is terrible

Hey guys,
So I dl'd .97 w/out problems, but when I tried to start PR I got the black screen that flickered from dark shade to dark shade a couple of times and then crashed to my desktop.
After various attempts at fixing the problem, I uninstalled BF2 and PR, dl'd the 1.41 patch and am now stuck at the 1.5 patch.
I can dl the 1.5 patch installer w/out problems. I start the 1.5 installer, get the 'security warning' about the publisher being unverified (normal stuff), and I click 'run'. I get the Windows 'working' blue circle and my computer creates sounds hinting that it is working. But nothing happens. In the past these installers have taken 15 minutes or so to start, I have waited well over an hour. I have dl'ed from several different sources so I'm sure that it's not a corrupt 1.5 patch file. I have updated my graphics card drivers, my .NET and other Windows 7 updates. I have restarted my computer after uninstalling BF2, installing BF2, installing 1.41, and I have done this process a couple of times.
note: When I install 1.41 I get an error that states that my version of windows (W7 64-bit) is not compatible. The top bar of the error box says 16-bit. The install still proceeds, the 'error' is the only abnormal bit about the re installing bf2 process.
