Welcome! You should try practicing some in coop mode to figure out how deviation works, and the basics.

Honestly, however, the "bulk" of your learning will be in online servers. Make sure you tell your Squad Leader you are new. Play as infantryman.

Also, read the manual, it should clear a few things out. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

To find out who is your enemy, you just need to play for a while. I remember I used to mix up the USMC and MEC uniforms in Muttrah City... You'll get used to it in a while! Just ask someone before you engage. In cases of extreme doubt, aim for the person (while scoped in) for a few seconds. If a nametag appears, he's friendly. Otherwise, not!

Don't shoot civies outside of ROE!

Good luck and enjoy!

Welcome to the forums!

As for telling enemies and friendlies apart, you'll have to open the map (default M) and confirm whether the area there is clear of friendly units or not. But generally, do not shoot unless your squad leader told you to open fire! All you need to do is reporting the units you see. If you make a mistake, it's easier to correct a wrong spotting than a friendly fire incident.

As for being 'banned': Some servers are 'full' at less than 64 players and trying to join will give you the "you have been banz0r'd" message. Nevermind it and try again later. Most server allow you to join at 61 or less players.

Accept the training offer you've been given above, these guys can give you detailed explanations for anything you might want to know. If you have too much time on your hands and prefer a video over the manual, you could also watch this: Project Reality 0.96 New Player Introduction - YouTube as it should be able to guide you through all basics, although the quality is low right now. I might do a better one and/or more to cover advanced aspects of the battlefield, if people are interested in a full tutorial video for PR.

I lol'd SO HARD
made me think of like a bunch of 8 year old kids playing PR and all the sudden big flashing letters "CHILDREN DETECTED" then they find themselves fighting off an army of pedobears and screaming and crying as they slowly die off and realize the imminent danger of their innocence.
my imagination is scary.

EDIT
totally forgot what this thread was originally about. Welcome I2Cold. As of friendlys and enemys, usually if you aim at a friendly long enough his name will pop up, but DO NOT rely on this. You must check the map, or else you might end up killing a team/squad mate. and dont rely on the looks of their uniforms either, people can steal kits and look almost exactly like you. just get a habit of constantly checking your map. Oh and another thing, your team mates can take enemy kits too, so just because it looks like an enemy theres a chance it might not be.

i just came up with an idea. take of the team kill punishment if you kill a friendly with a enemy kit. hmm ill post that in the suggestion section sometime..

The guy who stole the kit should get the penalty ^^

But still, friendly fire can best be avoided by not shooting at all without order, as a new player.

Well, I personally haven't seen a lot of kit "stealing" recently, but if that happens, it's normally for patches or if the guy earnestly needs it (such as if ammo has ran out).

And the hat thing is a bug... so there is no point of punishing the guy, really.

I agree with a lighter punishment for TKs involving enemy kits. Of course it doesn't really make sense in a "realistic" point of view, but, for new guys, I think it would be more forgiving.

For telling enemies and allies, there is normally a slight difference in the colour of uniform, for example on muttrah, the US is more grey and the MEC are more yellow, on all maps there is some difference, some are harder than others (such as Russia VS Militia). But seeing this may take some time :P As the others have said, the map is a sure fire way, just remember your Never Eat Shredded Wheat along with your compass (at the bottom of the screen) and you're sorted.

Oh yes with experiences you will be possible who is who, what type of weapon fired, or which vehicle from whichc side comming close. But at start. For example.
MEC has black boots
US has desert boots

Even if MEC take US kit he still have black boots ;-)
This is small eye trick. There are lots of similar skills. Take it care men. And good luck.
