Hi,

So as the title suggests im looking for a new gaming mouse.

I have been using the original saitek cyborg mouse, which has been great to me, however I have used it a lot and its showing signs of needing replacement...

The things I like about it is:
Multiple buttons (7 thumb buttons alone!, 4 on HAT switch) These are useful for voip + Arma2(as that has the most button assignments I have ever seen )
Thumb rest(good ergonomics)
Large size
3200DPI(normally set to 2700)
The looks =]


Now other things I would like
Wireless(not necessary, but would be a nice addition if theres a good mouse out there)
Profiles saving to the mouse itself(ill be using it on my laptop and desktop)


I have looked at the razer Naga, but tbh ?100 is a bit pricey, and with no thumb rest, it doesnt look comfy

The Logitech MX revolution, unfortunately does not fufill the button role

So does anyone out there have any suggestions based preferably on actual use on which is the best mouse available at the moment ?

Been looking at theR.A.T 7 saitek mouse (owning the old cyborg makes me think it'll be pretty good)
Anyone with first hand use of it?

I was too looking at that Cyborg at one point but it just looked too small for my hand and so i went for razor Imperator.
Now the Imperator doesnt have that many buttons but i never really needed em.
The mouse itself is very light but solid, and fit into hand like it was designed for my hand from day one and the plastic is rather high quality, so no squeeky buttons and stuff.
I didnt regret buying this one for a single moment and i am still very happy with it after like year..

Cons - ignoring its bit pricey, none

What mouse exactly do you have now? I use to have the "original" Cyborg Mouse many years ago until its mouse wheel broke, as well as the extended grip etc, but no HAT switch on it as you said



every Saitek mouse I've had, the mouse wheel has broken on and I've had quite a few over the years, although I am a heavy user of the mouse wheel for zooming in and out in Max etc but still, why I haven't gone back to them for mice. Although I love most of there other products still


What I'm currently using, have for some time and would strongly recommend is the M$ Sidewinder X8 which meets all your points apart from it doesn't have lots of buttons (has 7 but I find that to be too few for me), no thumb rest and Profiles can not be saved directly to the mouse itself (ignore the ?85 price tag on the link below, shop around and you can easily get it for under ?50).

Its been very reliable so far, had it for a over a year now at least and even with a tilt wheel and my over use of the mouse wheel, its still going strong!


If you really need the extra buttons, I would look at the Saitek RAT but it looks to have lots of things to go wrong with it...

I have that exact mouse, the 'HAT' switch, is the thing on the side where the thumb is, little 8 way d-pad like switch, don't know if its called HAT switch or otherwise :S, but has up, down left right directions, as well as diagonals (although they're disabled by default as its easy to get them mixed up)


Also thanks for the suggestions I'll read a few reviews on it too, and see if my local giant PCworld/Curry's has any to try out . 7 Buttons is easily enough thinking about it, just depends if they're in the right place.


And yes that is my worry about the R.A.T, so many things to loosen up over the hopefully years of using it.. (had my other saitek for at least 4 years..)

I may have to reconsider, even though I do love the white colour , strange obsession with anything white + black(see my PC build in these forums and you'll see more ).

Lol ye I remember that HAT switch now (it is called a hat switch too, but only a 4 way one). Been so long since I've used that mouse I totally forgot about it


As for the buttons in the right place on the X8, the only buttons that are in the right place IMO are the MMB and the back and forth buttons (as well as left and right click )...

The tilt wheel used as "buttons" isn't really an option IMO. Some say they use if for leaning and stuff in ARMA2 but I tried that and just found it to difficult to use both the tilt and left/right click at the same time but might just be down to the way I hold the mouse (only two fingers on the left and right buttons, then one of the two, normally the left to use the MMB, if you have 3 fingers it might be better, but a bit cramped).

The tilt wheel is how ever wonderful for side scrolling etc. Although I have to say that side scroll wheel on the RAT mouse looks even better for that hehe.

Went to a local PC world megastore thing, tried out a few mice including the sidewinder RAT 7, and a whole host of razer mice.

I found the sidewinder was very nice to hold, but possibly a bit to chunky but honestly my 2nd choice.
I did however end up going for the RAT, ordered it today (new 'Albino' edition) mainly because that scroll wheel by the thumb looks nice, and being a bit of a geek, i just love the styling, and well its white.

The razers although very nice, have too little buttons =] and I like to have shortcuts for many programs, and as I am slowly learning 3DS max, I feel having those shortcuts for rotating etc on the mouse will come in handy, as it does with photoshop.

I've been a fan of the G5 series for a long time, but that is not wireless. The G700 might be what you are looking for if you are interested in Logitech products.

So here's a mini review as requested.

I have not been doing much gaming but I have been using it for a week or so now and from what I have used it for its great.

Quality:
The build quality is great, no cheap plastics all hard plastics with even a metal skeleton that is the main frame for attaching all the goodies to it. The mouse wheel does not have the same problems as the old cyborg mouse, as it is free hanging by the looks of it, and is made of a different material that does not soak up any moisture or sweat.
I have come across a small issue with it however, which is that it can pick up dust quite easily, and the side affect this brings is that the cursor can move on its own. However I found just blowing into the sensor, or using a cloth and flapping the end of the cloth around the sensor hole fixed it 100%. This may have also been because I had eaten some crisps near my desk (student room, nowhere else )

Usefulness:
This mouse does not have the same amount of buttons as the old, and therefore does not have the same functionality. However with three profiles and 7 buttons its still pretty damn good.

Another feature it has is the thumb scroll wheel. This I currently use for changing songs on one profile, selecting weapons on another, and scrolling sideways on the third.

I generally split up my profiles into activies, such as web, gaming, work+music. You can change the "precision mode" button to whatever you want as well, which I didnt think was possible at first, which means that in my two non gaming modes, it is used for other more useful shortcuts.

Ergonomics:
The ergonomics are great, theres nothing wrong with the shape, size or weight especially seeing as you can customise it. I currently am using the higher palm rest, as I have a gel wrist pad it works well.

So overall the mouse is was a nice buy, however the ?90 price tag is still too steep. But then again it has a 6400 dpi sensor (which is literally unuseable, if mice designers going any higher than this, they are officially insane..).

If I find any more gripes with it I will post them here, but so far so good =]. Also worth noting I got the Albino version of the RAT 7 mouse, which has a different sensor, and is genearlly newer in build so they have fixed some of the smaller issues some others are reporting on the normal RAT 7

Glad your happy with that mouse. If my razor (ever ) ~brakes I might as well get one of these 7's RAT.

to compensate for high DPI, lower windows mouse speeds, turn mouse acceleration off and there you go now your mouse is epic it doesnt skip pixels, putting a 1000 report rate also helps

Cool. One thing thou is I wasn't too found with the 3 profiles thing, would probably need more than that here for max, bf2 editor etc. The nice thing about the X8 is that you can program buttons to an exe and when it detects you using that exe (not just if its running, if its the active window) the profile you programmed for that exe clicks in as soon as you use the program (although is a little button sometimes not recognising the exe or taking a little bit to do so, but normally dose it right away).
