Have you guys ever experienced this B.S.?


Tonight I was up late and the Hardcore server I usually play on is empty, so I decided to click on one of the "foreign" servers just to try it out to see what it is like. I join Realitymod.org China Public [RC Mumble] playing Muttrah.


I was placed on the USMC side. I made a cobra squad because there wasn't another, and when it spawned I asked over the team chat, "need a gunner for Cobra." THEN I WAS PROMPTLY BANNED! I was on the server for fully three minutes. At first I was confused, reading what the admin had typed in the chat to issue the command for the server software to ban me. Here's what he typed, "!B Cannuck, Lao Wai."


My Chinese is rusty so it took me a minute or two to understand, but once I did, I was irritated. For those of you who don't know Chinese, "Lao Wai" means "foreigner" or just "white people" in general. Oh the f**king irony, I am actually a Chinese Canadian.


So I imagine they have been doing this to everyone who spoke English on the server. The truth is, if they had asked me to only speak Chinese on this server because it was against the rules to do otherwise, I would've done so, because I understand some servers only allow a certain language, but I WAS NOT EVEN ASKED, just plainly banned! This is totally wrong!


My point is that this is extremely prejudiced and borderline racist. It seems like they assume everyone who speaks English is a Lao Wai. I didn't even get a warning or an explanation, just a immediate ban. If I didn't understand Chinese, then I would have been like WTF. I've never been treated like this on any other server, US, EU, BRA, GER or RUS.


Although I think the PR Devs have the policy that whatever Admins do on their own server is their business, this case does NOT fall into that category. The reasons are the following. One, this puts PR in a bad light, as if we condone this type of racially and nationally exclusive behaviour . Two, this makes the rest of the Chinese PR players and people look like a bunch of racist bigots, which most of us are not. Lastly, PR is supposed to be about having people from all types of backgrounds and nationalities coming together to enjoy a teamwork based game that we all love; we are determined to be different from the immature "kiddies" on Xbox Live that spew endless nonsense and racist comments.


Thus, I, if with the support of the PR community, would like to demand an investigation into this incident and encourage the DEVs to revoke Realitymod.org China Public's license to host PR unless these classless buffoons change the way they conduct themselves. I hope I can get support for this because what I ask is not unreasonable, and we need to send out a clear message to people who might represent our small community in detrimental ways that do not reflect our true aspirations.

TLDR : Racist and bigotted Chinese Server/Admin negatively representing the PR community. We need to revoke their (this server's not those of all Chinese servers) PR server license. This isn't about me "grieving," or anything selfish. We need to send a clear message to all abusive servers and admins by making an example of this case.

I don't know why you guys are calling me over-sensitive, not being objective and not sympathetic. I am Chinese, so there should be no reason that I would be offended by the "Lao Wai" comment. However, I made this thread because I want to look out for the PR community and raise awareness of this or any other types of discriminatory behavior on servers.

I know this is the internet and anything goes here, but we are PR, a small community, and we should do better than status quo.

Maybe the admin was a bad apple, but we should at least still have a discussion and decide how to deal with this type of bigotry in the future.

I don't think you have enough reason to be so hot under the collar, to be honest. Look at it from their perspective, especially if they don't speak English to 'explain' it to you. You were, in their eyes, about to grab a heavy asset without speaking their language, and if they didn't act quickly you'd be midflight and they'd potentially be unable to remove the 'non-teamworky-foreigner' until you decided to land.

TLDR - You're right that it's discrimination based on language, but IMO rightly so [and throwing out the 'perturbed citizen against racism' makes me roll my eyes] . Perhaps Canada is all lovey dovey with political correctness already, but have you considered that the Chinese have their own cultural rulesets, and that just because yours is the one you've grown up with, doesn't necessarily (devil's advocate here) make it more 'right' than theirs? <- Edit: You're part chinese! I would've assumed you of all people would know what it's like over there (I lived in Shanghai for about a month during an internship)

And for the record I've played there multiple times, and being able to speak only English, very basic spanish and very basic japanese... I've yet to be kicked.

Discipline based on race or ethnicity is surely breaching some form of the server licence.

But honestly If I was in their place I'd do the same thing. Its easier having a consistency with players, as opposed to having to try to play with someone who can't understand a word your saying (not in your case, of course)

I may or may not know what it is like in China, but I know for certain that what they did is wrong. One does not have to understand a country's culture to differentiate right from wrong. Objectively speaking, what they did goes against the basics of common courtesy and social norms (in any country!).

You might kick a person out of a squad for not knowing the same language, but out of a server? Servers are entitled to have their own rules, but they can't kick people for not speaking a language. The PR server license should make it so and not allow any discrimination based on language or ethnicity. It's not about this particular instance, but rather about sending a message to the very small PR community to think about our conduct.

Iv'e never been banned form that server for speaking English, however wrong forum i believe

The fact is, the community promotes the mod and makes it look good. The devs make the mod. If the devs wanted to make the mod look good and promote it as a geniuine task, it would require alot more people and alot more policing.

For now all we have is ourselfs. Make the best out of it.

Okay, some of you guys are missing the point. The problem isn't exactly with what the admin did, but rather with what he SAID. "Lao wai" means foreigner and white people, carrying an racist undertone and subtext. I wasn't banned for speaking English, but I WAS banned because the admin assumed I was a Lao Wai because I spoke English.

Do you think this goes on a lot on servers like these? Except unfortunately for them, they were caught this time.

I think that you should discuss this first on their forums. I'm sure that is the best way. Calling in the hit squads without discussing it first is not good for anyone involved here.

Maybe you just experienced a frustrated admin, somone comes on the server, speeks in english while trying to take a cobra, hes having a bad day, ive been an admin so i know how it feels. The fact he used the tem Lao Wai when banning you was wrong sure, no one should be discriminated against for race in a game, also the fact he gave you no warning was wrong, but its his server and he has every right to get pissed off at somone trying to take a heavy asset who, for all he knows, speeks nothing of the servers language.

Again, your perception of the situation is not necessarily fact...

I did a bit of digging on lao wai [老外] and it's much like gaijin [外人] over here (you can even see that same chinese character in both, which means outside, I believe) which is only as offensive as you, the recipient, want it to be. It means 'Foreign person'... the racist undertone and subtext, especially given that it was a non-verbal communication, is at best tenuous.

The article I found (given a 2001 reference so quite dated) mentions that many foreigners perceive malice where there is none intended, due to cultural differences in the context of referring to people from outside the country in question. The last 10 years have probably introduced more angst/contention to the word, but again it falls on the perception and the actual intent behind it.

All that being said, you're the one who technically knows more about it than I... but it was an interesting point you've raised. I still feel like you're being somewhat oversensitive.

And to inject a bit of levity to this thread, I give you the awesome Scott Adams:

If it is consistently factual, then I see a point to this. Gather enough evidence, ask other english speakers to go there and see what happens , that's all you can do at this point.

Never had that, but got banned for taking the CAS chopper on Jabal even though the admin didn't have a squad and I did : D

Obviously you are getting way to emotional for being regarded as a foreigner as you moved out of China.

There are many reason to not allow players from the other side of the ocean. Ping is one. Language is another. Compare to the portuguese speaking server.

We don't discuss bans on here, take it to their forums or just don't play there.

Its their server and they can ban whoever they want.
