Those ads are randomly generated depending on the page text. If a thread was made talking about clothing, it would generate ads based on keywords.

The developers have no say on what ads are there to my knowledge. And who cares anyway? I get emails begging me to buy pills to make my **** bigger, but I don't buy them. If you really don't want to see the ads, donate a one time fee to become a Supporting Member.

Aren't those targeted ads based on your browsing history?

My mum asked me to get my sister some straighteners online and now I get GHD ads :p

I think some of them work that way. I've noticed that after visiting pornsites, I get these dating site ads. Google and privacy, eh. Knowing this, one can find out many things about his friends and family (by using their PC/laptop), even things that he really doesn't want to know.

Yes if you don't like an ad on a website, click it and don't purchase anything on the page (I don't advise clicking it if it says "you have a virus on your computer, click here to download an anti-virus", although I'd hope you all have enough common sense to avoid that..). That way they pay for the ad click, and get nothing in return :) win win.
