Hey, I was just wondering why PR hasn't expanded into naval scene. I think having destroyers, cruisers, and aircraft carriers on one map fighting against each other would be quite impressive and cool in PR. I know Forgotten Hope for BF1942 had LOADS of models and FHSW expanded on it crazily, and the battles were EPIC. Not necessarily complaining about the lack of ships, just wondering why the DEV team never "got their sea legs".

good question.
however, there's a simple answer to that. Models. Currently, we have what, 1-2? big military ships in game. IE the problem is that all these would need to be modeled.

What is the last time there has been a big naval battle between the armies we have in PR?

Its never been the team's focus. The mod is about the average soldier, and there is still alot of work to do before 1.0; so diverting resources to building navies would not be a good use of resources.
It would also be a huge job, there is only two ships currently ingame - the Essex and a RHIB, building the various combat vessels of the USN would be a huge job in itself but then building the navies of other countries to fight against would be a whole other load of work...a whole mod in itself.
The Norwegians have got a lovely ship model coming in (and the British Navy have been playing with that same ship recently as we're thinking of buying some, yaaaay!) so there may be some more seabourne action in the future. But I think its safe to say that there won't be any 100% Naval combat in PR, especially since our gameplay has always been about the grunts; the tanks, jets and helicopters exist to facilitate the Grunt gameplay rather than being the focus (the exception being vehicle warfare mode)

We would need a full 200 player server just to man one of the ships.

And the fact that the ships couldn't really move.

Well those "Ships" were statics, could code them like the RHIB boats, and model them like vehicles, but Ships are hard to model.

I thought carriers use normal diesel engines or even nuclear engines?
What are these jets you speak off?

I think there is a way to move the Essex on Muttrah, I'm going to find the entrance to it one day.

The extent of modern naval battle is a little sonar blip, followed by a cruise missile or torpedo launch from dozens of kilometers away. Probably not worth modelling whole navies.

When was the last time the Middle East formed a Coalition and invaded the west? Either never, or my history teacher was godawful.
Does BF2 even have integrated naval combat on a large scale? I know 1942 did, but is that sort of thing possible on the engine?

I don't think it's really possible to have vehicles the size of the Essex in BF2.

***** please. Jet Carriers are so the future.
I would not mind landing on a jet carrier moving at 800km/h with a jet. And that is just badass your just to afraid to admit it.
AND I DONT FAIL

Its is somewhat possible, you might want to check this really cool mod out
Problem was they had to have really low poly ships, and walking on them was seriously glitchy when they where moving, with most players dying in the processes of trying to walk along the deck
But anyways on topic, modern naval combat isn't pulling up in range of a enemy ship and firing shells at them, trying to strike a hit. Its pushing a button, firing an anti-ship missile over a massive distance, with the enemy ship trying to counter it with CIWS and countermeasures such as chaff etc. Its really out of BF2's scale and isn't going to be that fun either

Maybe implement naval battles in PR:Normandy.
Like how BF1942 had those usable ships and submarines.

Maps aren't big enough;
Combat would be represented unrealistically;
Would be boring looking at a radar and then pressing the 'fire missile' button;
Those reasons are enough not to warrant it. I'd rather see Eyl finished to see some actual proper boarding missions launched from naval vessels.

We can make very large 100% water maps without any real issues, but they can't have any terrain in them.
