Replace handheld weapon overheating sound with barrel change sound

Suggestion: Replace the boiling water sound that currently plays when you overheat a handheld weapon (weapon_handheld_overheat.wav) with a generic barrel change sound.
Pro: Makes the time you have to wait when overheating seem more plausible (immersion), simple to implement, realism
Con: Does not loop as well as the old sound, which means that it has to be long enough in order for it not to play twice
It seems like all LMGs ingame (e. g. MG3, MG4, Minimi, PKM) support quick barrel change IRL. While squad automatic weapons like the RPK, QBB-95 or L86 LSW* do not as far as I know, it is rather hard to overheat them.
*While the M249 is usually referenced to as the SAW, it is still an LMG ("Light Machine Gun, 5.56 mm, M249" (Source: Wiki).

I'd like to see the overheated time be expanded, especially on deploy able and mounted .50 cals on vehicles.

GEAH! i hate over heating effects they always piss me off ... and especially with apcs when your shooting ... it over heats you let it cool then start shooting right away it over heats again .... but for your idea i could see that might need to be refined a bit though

To be honest the current overheating system needs more serious changes then the sound itself... Whats the sense behind this waiting time?? You wait 15 sec for the gun to cool down, then you shoot once, it overheats immedietly and you have to wait again the same amount of time?! It would even make less sence with barrel changing sound, since you get completely new cold barrel.
I would rather replace overheating gun blocking time with some small amount of damage your vehicle gest every time you shoot while in overheated state, cause there is nothing annoying then "psssss" sound during fight with another APC which leaves you powerless and sentenced to death.

Shame we can't change it so that it takes less than a full mag to take down certain targets - If we could then the problem of cooling being annoying would be nullified anyway.

You do realise that IRL guns don't stop firing when they overheat.
Using logic and physics i figure that
1 Your shots go all over the place. As the bullets will be guided less as the barrel is getting softer.
2 Your fire rate will slow. As the bolt expands and will rub more against the inside of the gun.
3 Your gun would jam if you really really push it. As the bolt would've expanded so much and slowed down so much that it doesn't complete the cycle.
Can someone with gun experience actually confirm or disprove this.
But chance are we are just stuck with a flawed overheat effect.
As with most good ideas PR it's hard coded

I suggest increasing the amount of shots you can take before over heating...significantly. at least 50-75% longer than now.
the over heating sound effect will fade in at ~75% and fade away at ~75% during the cooling process. i want the gunner to have somewhere between 3-5 seconds of continuous fire from the time the sound effect starts till the gun locks up.
at 100% the weapon will lock up as it does now until it cools to a certain point. I would like the time this requires to be significantly longer than it is now as well.
my goal is to allow a machine gun to fire longer as it is at most times necessary and realistic and give the gunner an audio warning to the heat level. However if the gunner continues to fire at a high ROF they will be punished through the weapon locking up for longer than it does currently.
if possible i would also like cool down time to be short to simulate a barrel change if the gunner stops firing prior to the gun locking.
this applying to ALL machine guns.

I thought you need to fire like 2-3 mags in a row with LMG in order for it to overheat.

I think the barrel change aspect for light arms would be better, especially for the MG's mounted on vehicles and bunkers (provided there is also an animation with it, it would be rather odd to hear the sound and see no movement associated with it). However, I am not sure about APC cannons, I rather like the current overheating system for APC's. It would be neat to see accuracy degraded as heat level increases.

"SAW" stands for "squad automatic weapon". It's not one specific weapon. The M249 is one of them.

No and no. First of all, the FN Minimi doesn't fit the usual definition of a squad automatic weapon, i.e. being an assault or battle rifle with a heavier barrel and larger magazines like the RPK, LSW or QBB-95. Instead it is a light machine gun.
Secondly, SAW has become a synonym for the M249. If you ask any player on PR to tell them about "the SAW", they will describe the M249.

Excellent idea!
As it is now, the gunner has no way of knowing when the gun is about to overheat. It's just guesswork and/or previous experiences, it unnecessarily adds to the learning curve. Having the boiling water sound as a warning and the barrel change as a total overheat signal seems like a much more intuitive system.

OMG! get it?
ahhh I kill me....
Well if there was an animation slot for this kind of thing i would agree with the OP, but otherwise i think it would be counter productive and would ruin immersion. There's a few really talented programmers working on other bf2 mods and they seems to be uncovering amazing things in their mods with regards to overlays and putting hands on the handles of .50cal mgs. i wish they were on this forum giving us some tips.

Alpha Project anyone?

Although I haven't really tested other handheld LMGs in PR besides the M249, it takes ~ 1.5 mags full auto to overheat it.
