New player here, need someone to check if this will work

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by.

I've been playing and loving the Battlefield franchise since Bad Company and play a lot of Battlefield 3 these days. The more modern games are fun, but I also want to play something slow-paced and solid. I heard everyone had a blast with Battlefield 2 back in the days, but it looks a bit too simple for me actually. The Project Reality mod however, looks like something I could enjoy and appreciate very well.

I never owned a copy of Battlefield 2, so I will have to install this first. As far as I know I can get one from either Origin or Steam. But I have a few questions about this:

1) Are both options/versions compatible with PR-mod?
2) If so, is there a difference or is one better than the other?
3) Will there be enough servers to justify my 20 bucks?

Thanks for reading, and I hope some of you could answer my questions!

Best option is retail copy, IMO. Never tried steam or origin, but I heard having retail saves some hassle. I got mine for $10 on amazon.

There's plenty of servers, each with their own tight knit community, woven in with a huge PR community. PR is more about tactics and teamwork instead of games like BF3 which focuses on most kills win.

Steam-version should be compatible. However, still some people have trouble with it.

Does anyone even buy anything off Origin?

Steam version works, but there is some hassle. I'm not a big fan of buying games without the actual hard copy of the game.

Whatever you choose, there are plenty of helpful people around these forums you can ask help from if you encounter problems with the installation.

If you want faster response, joinIRC Quakenet #projectreality. It's a PR technical support superhotline, and I can't remember the last time someone was left without a solution after asking for help there :D Unless they weren't patient enough to wait for a response and left within few minutes of joining the channel

Thanks for the info everyone!
I think I'll go for the Origin version since that one turns out to be 5 bucks cheaper and is kind of the official Battlefield-distributor.

We'll see how it goes!

I have the origin version, but I've not actually tried going online with it yet

I used to have the EA downloader version (BF2 complete collection, I think its basically the same) and it worked fine

Orgin and Steam will both work... but you have to manuel direct it! :(
It's NBD though.... it's just easy as 1.2.3.

Depends where you live...

If you are a EU player... you will find more EU players on EU server's.
If you are a US player... you will find more US players on US servers and EU.

Get a mic... or you feel the pain of not talking.
Mic's are the best dang thing for this game... mics are better then humans' playing it...

I don't know if retail is better or not, but my disk got cracked after about a year. Fortunately, it was still working (but using it after that point seems kind of stupid in retrospect) and made an ISO of it. Not that it matters now, since after the 1.5 patch, you don't need the disk inside to play.

Retail works fine. Origin works fine. Steam works fine after you replace bf2.exe with the retail version (Steam problem, not PR, though it'll be "fixed" in a way with the next PR version). Pick whatever version is most convenient for you :) .

The retail copy works best and is no more expensive than a Steam copy. In fact, I'm pretty sure Steam makes you pay $20 for the entire pack, while you only need the original game to play PR, and you can get the original game at a store for $10.

The only bad thing is that you have to keep track of the manual in order to save your CD key. It used to be retrievable from the hash until Windows Vista changed the way it stored registry files. I lost mine, and I think that when I get a new computer I'm going to have to copy and paste the hash code into the file after forcing an install.

If possible, get a retail copy. Someone has to have it (and doesnt paly it anymore). One of your friends, or friends of your friends.

Also it will probably be the best money spent ever.

The one advantage of the Steam version is that it averts the whole complicated "install order" thing with the patches and expansion packs...everything is installed in one neat package.

It does give you some trouble if you have an unstable connection(although at that point you shouldn't be playing online anyway) and BF2 loads slower than PR likes to, but other than that and the recent empty server problem(where you have to replace the .exe with the retail version) it works fine. And doing the latter also fixes the former, strangely enough.
