A different kind of damage model for the vehicles

Here's my 2cents
I'd like to see a damage model for the vehicles so, that with smaller caliber weapons, you actually need to shoot the shit out of them and still they (usually) won't explode.
As in, there could be the shell (car body) which is penetratable in most parts and inside you have for example the engine, which can be busted.
For what I know, the Hummer's pretty solid vehicle, and can be shot to million pieces and it still moves..
When you're driving a tank for example and get hit on your turret, so that it goes out of action, you'd need to get it repaired. Or maybe it'll just knock out the main gun, and you'd still have the coaxial MG to protect yourself while retreating for cover.
This style of vehicle damage is used in Operation: Flashpoint, though it could have been better and more complex.
It would also make the need to actually aim for vehicles "sweetspots" when being a normal rifleman.
Actually, I quite a lot doubt the effectiveness of even modern AT weapons when it comes to a headon situation with a modern tanks..
Ideas, opinions?
