A different kind of damage model for the vehicles

Here's my 2cents

I'd like to see a damage model for the vehicles so, that with smaller caliber weapons, you actually need to shoot the shit out of them and still they (usually) won't explode.

As in, there could be the shell (car body) which is penetratable in most parts and inside you have for example the engine, which can be busted.
For what I know, the Hummer's pretty solid vehicle, and can be shot to million pieces and it still moves..

When you're driving a tank for example and get hit on your turret, so that it goes out of action, you'd need to get it repaired. Or maybe it'll just knock out the main gun, and you'd still have the coaxial MG to protect yourself while retreating for cover.
This style of vehicle damage is used in Operation: Flashpoint, though it could have been better and more complex.

It would also make the need to actually aim for vehicles "sweetspots" when being a normal rifleman.
Actually, I quite a lot doubt the effectiveness of even modern AT weapons when it comes to a headon situation with a modern tanks..

Ideas, opinions?

well this is true but i know most military vehicles are deisgned so that they can take damage to otherwise critical parts of the car (ie engine and ties) and keep running, at least if you read BHD the book youd have an appretiation for how tought they make those things

I was watching the discovery channel and one of the UH-60's rotors actualy clipped the ground on a super low bank and the pilot managed to recover and fly away.

i like the idea of hitting the engine doing actual damage, and hitting the body does very little or no damage. And being capable of taking out the tanks main turret, and being able ot repair would be really cool to.

700 posts...w00t
even at that the fuel tank wont necessaryily explode, mythbusters did a episode on that.

As people have already mentioned, Mythbusters did an episode on this topic a while ago (Scube Diver, Car Capers). They thoroughly debunked the myth that a car will explode if shot through the gas tank.
Car Capers 3: â$˜Shooting Carsâ$™
If a car is shot through the gas tank, will it explode? Adam, Jamie and a fire crew go to a firing range to find out. Jamie shoots the carâ$™s gas tank with fuel in it. The bullets not only hit the tank, but go through the tank. The car does not explode, disappointing the fire crew and the Mythbusters.

Myth Busted.
Small arms fire damaging modern tanks? I don't think so.

I can see how you could code in 'weak spots' to vehicles (read my ideas on tanks) , but im not sure if BF2 will be able to do stuff like - shot in tire= bad turning or shot in turret = turret no worky, but rest of tank is fine.

Can't do it in 42... and BF2... i guess im just pessimistic/realistic on the amount of stuff DICE codded in to let modders do that the game doesn't already do... but im not tottaly sure.

hmm so what size rounds should do damage to vehicles?

5.56 mm and up or 7.62 and up?

i think 5.56 because im sure a SAW could do some damage to a car, maybe even a hummer.
