Hey lads.
I was wondering if anyone had any good advice on laptops. I want to ditch my desktop because its too big and clunky, (but very strong) and i would like to get a reasonably strong laptop that i can do my work on instead.
any ideas?

ah thanks for the reply.
People don't usually venture down to the murky depths of the hardware gnomes forum.
Okay well less than E1000
For animating, vectors on photoshop and flash, so 4+ GB ram
3d modeling, and rendering.
Gaming inst a huge priority, but maybe skyrim ^_^

I prefer HP 620 laptop for you because I have been using it since one year. Features also not bad and still it is working fine.

We're in the middle of the laptop manufacturers rolling out new models with new GPUs, and sson with IvyBridge, new CPUs,
You might find good deals on laptops with GTX 560 , GTX 570, HD 6970m etc video cards, which would future proof you in regards to gaming for the next 2 or 3 years, and future proof for art work stuff basically until the hinges fall off the laptop.
Asus G53SX-XR1 and G53 series with 560M, 570M
the Asus G73 series with 17" screen, same GPUs,
etc.
Post again when closer to the day of purchase, and the peanut gallery will chime in.

Just wanna give this a little bump.
So do you know if Newegg ships abroad? And these prices are awesome. They end up being just over 600 euros for me, which is sweet considering i probably spent around 1500 on and off building this thing with custom parts. ill be happy to get 1k but probably not, with the way money is around here.
Important info, will a bigger screen make a big difference price wise? And im used to using a computer with Heat sync, will there be a big drop in performance seeing as laptops dont have heat syncs? Can you give me more info on cooling laptops and getting better performance?
I never had a laptop before so im kind of nervous leaving my comfort zone to go for something totally different. Will i have to totally rely on getting somebody else to fix it for me? are there problems with dust? can i maintain it myself?
Any info like that would be great, thanks.

1. Does Newegg.com ship internationally?
Newegg.com does not currently ship internationally; we only deliver to locations within the United States and to Puerto Rico.
2. Bigger screen (say from 15.6 inch to 17" inch, usually costs an additional US$45 to US$120 for TN (Twisted Nematic) LED Backlit LCD panels. A screen using IPS technology can cost upwards of US$150 more to go from 15.6 to 17 inches.
3. Regarding heat, most "gaming" laptops have good cooling, you can buy a cooling pad for an additional 30 Euro, some cooling pads work, some don't.
4. Regarding fixing a laptop. It is not that difficult to fix yourself, however you should alway take advantage of manufacturer warranties during the warranty period because opening up laptops can void the warranty. The simple answer is... on Google find someone who has dissasembled your laptop model or a similar model and posted photos and a how-to guide online, then monkey what they did.
One last point, HP/Compaq laptops are incredibly difficult to repair due to the cheap plastic tabs used.

Here's some from TigerDirect.com
ASUS N55SF-EH71 Notebook PC - Intel Core i7-2670QM 2.2GHz, 8GB DDR3, 750GB HDD, DVDRW, 2GB Nvidia GT 555M, 15.6 Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Black, 1-YR Warranty/1-YR Accidental Damage at TigerDirect.com
ASUS G73SW-XT1 Laptop Computer - Intel Core i7-2630QM 2.0GHz, 8GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, Blu-ray/DVDRW, 17.3, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Black, 2-Year Warranty / 1-Year Accidental Damage (Refurbished) at TigerDirect.com
One thing about the ASUS G50 and G70 series. I used to have a G53 (stolen) and they are BIG. I mean it. Big. On the positive side, their performance is amazing. The one I had was able to handle ARMA2 with little problems.
Also, the G73 I posted has a 460M in it, but I believe LITOralis said this on another thread, some variants of it can put of the same performance as a 500 series. I friend of mine had this exact one and it performed to a level of mine, if not better than.
Look at the last post of the first page, and the first post of the second page.

could you maybe look at the specs from laptops 17.3' and up, and recommend from this website? This is the site i am most firmiliar with. and unfortunatly seeing as newegg dont ship over seas, it might be best to go with the usual suspects (for me that is) also mangeface, ill keep an eye out on the site you showed, but those netbooks are too small for me.

Psyko, everyone one of those Asustek laptops you listed are definitively NOT for gaming.
gt630, gt520m, gt610m and gt630m are all targeted toward home entertainment/home office market segment.
Was looking on etailers in Ireland, laptops are quite expensive due to VAT.
What is your budget for this?
