PR runs slow as sh*t on my system. WTF am I doing wrong?

It's starting to get really frustrating when I can't win a firefight because my framerate is having a frakking embolism every time I pull up my sights. My system isn't exactly top of the line, but it's not old enough that I shouldn't be able to run this 7 year old game smoothly on bare bones video settings.
My specs: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 4GB DDR2 Memory nVidia GeForce 8800GTS 320MB
All my video settings are on low/off and I reduced render distance to 80%. The only thing I can think of that would cause slowdown is the soundcard in this thing took a **** so I'm using onboard sound. Also I have the resolution set to 1680x1050 as that is my monitor's native.
What can I do to fix framerate, or do I really need to upgrade?

shut down all unnecessary background processes.
There is a program called gamebooster that does this automatically.
What OS? 32 or 64 bit?
Also, you might look through guru3d.com and download tweaked drivers for your video card. NOTE that I can not give you support on this... I haven't attempted this since the 8800GTs were new.

I also would use a 3rd party defrag utility, mydefrag.com , and go to the forums and download a custom script to move your system files and BF2/PR files to the fastest part of your hard drive.

That program seems to have worked! Now I'm wondering wtf I had running in the background that would slow my system down so much...

Antivirus, anti malware, etc the stuff takes up resources and RAM and RAM can considerably slow down the game
