[Solved] High Settings Not High?

I've been playing BF2 PR for quite awhile on a different computer with high settings, but I've recently built a new PC and installed PR with BF2 on it. Once I'm in-game, with all of the settings at their highest, the textures appear to be quite ugly, not of the high-settings standard which I'm so used to playing.

Relevant specs:
Win 7 Pro x64
Radeon HD 6950
Running "highest" settings

Here's some example images:

Am I delusional? Just stupid? I don't know, help me out if you can though. Thanks.

Same thing happens to me , and I honestly don't know how to fix it.
My 'voodoo' method that works is to restart PR, change settings back to highest, click apply, change the resolution to something lower, click apply, change back to my correct resoltuion, click apply, then close PR, then restart.

For me, PR loses it's settings if I minimize to desktop too often...

Hm, unless you're missing something from your instructions, that doesn't seem to work. Thanks for the quick reply, though.

Tried deleting shaders? Lower AA to 4x or 2x.

Wow, that's terrible. Make sure your /documents/battlefield 2/profiles/<profile number>/video.con file is not read only, and/or try setting it manually in that file (open in notepad, set the numbers to 3 for high).

No, that doesn't seem to work either. Just to make sure, the shaders you're talking about would be in Documents-> Battlefield 2-> mods-> bf2-> cache-> (Assorted numbers)?

It's not set to read only, all are 3.

Thanks for your help gentlemen, if we can't get this resolved I'll just go ahead and try re-installing everything, shouldn't take too long. Also I suppose updating my graphics drivers won't hurt.

EDIT: Tried driver updating, and it in fact made it worse I think. Dropped crates are now completely black. (A common problem I believe).

Also, something I didn't mention earlier: When I installed BF2 and PR earlier today, I started PR and went in-game before starting BF2 and going in-game. Perhaps something could have gone amiss there?

Well, re-installed BF2, tried playing, and I still have the same problem. Fascinating, yet so very frustrating.

EDIT: Alright, I believe I fixed it. Taking the idea off AncientMan, I set the levels manually through the video.con file, then set that file to read only. I went in-game, and all appeared well. I feel like it still looks a bit iffy, but certainly good for now.

Comparison, I guess:

Max settings, read only off. (No AA)

Max settings, read only on. (8xAA)

Look right to you fellas?

I once had that, but it was because I set something in my ATI control center to "performance" instead of "quality" - ended up with the same. If you have something like that for your video card, make sure it's not set to performance.

Could you show us another screen? A carrier wall isn't the best thing, but it looks OK from what I can see.

I'd like to point out that I get this WHILE connected to a server.
series of events as follows:

1. open PR in fullscreen and log in.
2. join server.
3. before or after first spawn...
4. If I minimize PR, when i return to fullscreen the detail level randomly falls back to everything set to low.
5. I have to leave server and exit PR, making me rage.
6. When I restart PR my settings are still set to 'lowest' across the board.
7. To fix, I restart PR, change settings back to highest, click apply, change the resolution to something lower, click apply, change back to my correct resolution, click apply, then close PR, then restart.

Alright, I take that back. It appears that the textures on those two objects on the carrier seemed to not be so low, while the other ones are still at low.

These are images of those same things with read only on the video.con file on, on the afters. All settings set to highest.

Strange, how those two objects on the carrier are higher quality, while the other things remain the same.

Wait, unless they're vanilla items? Perhaps that is it.

EDIT: No, went into vanilla, still had the problem there. Guess it's just those two items. Maybe the AA is doing it?

EDIT 2: Nope, nothing to do with the AA. The firebox and the life ring thing go to higher when using my method. Everything else so far, nothing.

There is a bug with grass switching detail levels occasionally due to AA on with nVidia cards, maybe it applies...
The fix is to
  1. close PR, delete shader cache
  2. in pr options change AA to "off"
  3. join a game (so that shaders are "optimized" again)
  4. restart PR
  5. change AA to what ever you like
  6. restart PR (next time you will join a game the shaders will not optimize again, even though a dialog said so)
Try this maybe it helps.

Nope, that doesn't seem to do anything SnipingCoward.

Also, tried forcing everything to high quality in the Catalyst control center, it looks nice but textures are still low on some things.

Hmph...this is very strange.

I assume you have admin privileges on that windows account. Make sure you run everything as admin.

Delete your complete profile in My Documents> Battlefield 2...in fact delete whole Battlefield2 folder.

Run vBF2 as admin. Retrieve account, edit settings (audio, video, everything), join MP game, close.

Run PR as admin. That should fix it.

If not use switches in target line of shortcut of PR.

Code: Select all

".....\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" start +widescreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900 +restart +playerName yourname +playerPassword yourpassword
You dont have to include playername and playerpassword. Others will override few things in video.con, and skip intro's. Edit +szx and +szy to suit your needs. Its your resolution setting. Try in some other resolutions.

Other things to do:

make sure that everything in ATI CP is set to performance. This might happen if you GPU is running on lower clocks while in game.

go to windows CP and make sure Power plan is set to high performance especially for PCI-express link state power management is OFF.

Tried those MaSSive, they don't work. Setting the resolution in the shortcut settings causes the game to CTD before the splash screens. I also don't know where to change " PCI-express link state power management " in the CP, but I did set what I could to high performance.

I see you have an ATI card. Open up Catalyst Control Center, and find the 3D Application Settings.
Once in there, make sure Mipmap is set Quality, and not Performance. This can have quite the impact on texture quality.
Also, since you're in there, also check that the Anisotropic Filtering is using Application settings.

Edit; I somehow missed your post about forcing everything to Quality. So yea, disregard this.

Not having ATI card but I assume you have application profiles there.

Check and restore to default for BF2.exe, and then try it.
