[Solved] BF2 or PR error

Hi!
Just recently reinstalled BF2 1.5 and PR. When I try to start up PR I only get to the splash screen and then it shuts off. Figured something was wrong with PR but I also tried to start BF2 which got me to a black screen in 1/2 sec and then it crashes, both with no crash report.
Hope someone else has had the same problem (or not) and can give me a heads-up.
I think there must be something wrong with BF2
Arty

- Running as admin if on Vista/Win7
- Ran BF2 at least once and joined MP game
- Installed all the relevant patches
- I have Steam copy of BF2
- changed monitors recently
- installed Punkbuster

also if this does not fix PR
the common spash screen crash solution is to delete the BF2 folder in your users folder and than restart BF2 to make a new profile and than PR

I don't understand why no one asks people to run in a window to check if it's throwing a readable error? I would say the vast majority of the time it'll spit out an error, which is generally profile related and can be fixed with video.con edits or as rushn said, deleting and retrieving the BF2 folder in \My Documents\

Guess you asked and answered it. It has been explained thousands of times, but people would rather come ask for help without doing any search first.
Were making a general guidelines for posting in support section, with mini FAQ so in the future questions like this will not be accepted, and will be pointed back to guidelines.

Theres your problem. You NEED to run BF2 at least once prior to installing and starting PR. PR is not able to create profiles and accounts, its a feature of BF2.
If you have Battlefield 2 folder in My Documents delete it, and then run vanilla BF2, join MP game, if all is OK, then run PR.

Tried to run BF2 or PR?
Add this in you shortcut taget line "+menu 1 +fullscreen 0 + szx 800 + sxy 600 +restart"
So you target line looks like this
Code: Select all
"C:\Program Files\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 0 + szx 800 + sxy 600 +restart
Do not copy-paste this adjust to your BF2 install location!
If you get any errors try to get screenshot of it and post it here.

Not that damn thing again...ok try without resolution. Delete profiles folder again if there is one in My Documents> Battlefield 2 - delete complete folder ( battlefield 2 ) and edit your shortcut like this:
Code: Select all
"C:\Program Files\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 0"
Again, adjust to your path.
Can you tell me at which resolution and refresh rate is your laptop running now?

I'm having the exact same error message when run in windowed (no error in fullscreen aswell) tried everything on the internet, BF2 won't even launch

. I have a laptop aswell, it is running in 1366*768 (maximum resolution) @ 60Hz (only available refresh rate). OS Is windows 7 64bit. Dx is up to date, driver are up to date, tried every solution I could find on the internet (compatibility, resolution in .con files, deleting BF2 in my documents, reinstalling, etc.)
Oh i'm so dumb, reinstalled all of this in a hurry, 1.5 must be installed over 1.41, it is incremental. I'm going to try this out.

I am having a similar issue on win vista. This started happening to me as soon as i changed monitors. Now the differences are that i have 1980x1200 resolution and 60hz refresh rate.

All of you, this is a problem with patching. Either you're missing some patch or you installed in incorrect order. Solutions are provided already in this thread and in the sticky threads.
Follow install instructions
here.

I had PR installed way before this issue started occurring and everything was fine. It is right at the moment that i switched monitors and changed my resolution and refresh rate for them that this problem came up. Did not change anything with regards to PR.

@ xatu miller
If that is the case, delete folder Battlefield 2 in My documents, and launch BF2 once as admin, retrieve your accounts, and edit settings. Then run PR as admin.
Quicker solution but more complicated is to go trough your profiles and edit Video.con settings manually. Open My Documents>Battlefield 2>Profiles. You should have folders named 0001, 0002, 0003, etc, depends how many profiles you have. Go trough all of them and edit file named Video.con especially the line that says this
Code: Select all
VideoSettings.setResolution 1440x900@60Hz
Edit the line 1440x900@60Hz or whatever you have there to suit your needs, or according to your new monitor native resolution specs. File can be edited in Notepad but I recommend using
Notepad++ ( free advanced text editor ).

I tried deleting the bf2 folder however another issue came up. PR would always stop responding on the splash screen even though i was running it as admin. I am reinstalling it in a moment and i am going to see if that will help. If not i will try the more complicated solution you suggested.

After reinstalling PR everything works just fine. However i needed to turn on bf2 vanilla once before actually getting PR to run.
