any thoughts? I have the island in a DEM and a .tif if I need it. In geo it loads like that, and in L3DT it loads super stretched vertcally, I cant even edit it.

x2,
with scaled down terrain you also need to scale down the height otherwise it looks really odd.

Reduce the max permitted height of your map.

I hope you didn't change the height of your terrain in the heightmap by just darkening the image.... You should use the full range of your heightmap so you get the max amount of height control aswell as it will reduce the amount terrain lods impacts on "warping" your terrain.
As said before, change the max height in your level settings options here:
L3DT also has a min and max height options, dunno about Geo Control but I expect it dose too somewhere.

Yes, but I changed that but all that did was stretch the terrain vertically, where as what I wanted to bring that island up. The .tif had a black area around it which meant level 0 of terrain, so I raised the levels a bit to raise the island a bit higher so the water doesnt cut off the shores and what not

Ye, most DEM data classes the sea level as 0 height, where you need to manually make the sea bed.
