Hello Project Reality team.

Since I started playing vanilla Battlefield 2 I saw the difference between aircraft simulators and planes in PR. Your fantastic mod has a good physics in flying mode, but I think that the only important problem is the throttle. I uses a professional joystick (4 axis + 12 buttons), and I can fly helicopters with a very true level of realism, but I think that there are a problem with throttle in planes because is not very exact in order to reduce or increase speed.

I consider myself a noob into vanilla to PR conversion, and I don't know if it's posible to change any internal command that can solve this problem.

Finally, thanks for all your work and I hope that you can find a solution for this

ive always agreed to the aircraft need a throttle control ..... opposed to Full open or full closed -_- ... using a joystick helps because the throttle control actually works with the bf2 engine go figure.. but i agree we need it to be so you press E" and the throttle icon slowly moves up then when you let go it stops and stays at the selected throttle same with D" for down throttling ..

Press E, you will eject from the aircraft

What he means is : Button '?' to increase other button '?' to decrease throttle.

I think that we should be able to increase/decrease the throttle by using the mouse wheel.

Most joysticks out there these days have an adjustable throttle built into them:


and many of the more expensive ones have separate throttle units, like the x52 which I've been using for many years now.



The problem with making a button controlled throttle, ie, you can "slide" the percentage of throttle upwards and downwards by pressing w or s, like the ship throttle on the battleships bf2 mod for any of you who might have played that, is that doing this means true joystick throttles can no longer be used... As for what SFox is asking for with different keys from W and S to "slide the throttle", not possible.

For this reason, we are not going to make it so you can "slide" the percentage of your throttle up via the w and s keys as otherwise all we will end up doing is making flight less realistic, less responsive and overall turning pilots who do have the correct controls off from flying in PR.

As such, if you want to be able to control your throttle more in PR, all I can suggest is buying a joystick with a throttle. TBH even the orignal Sidewinder Joystick from M$ has a built in throttle so you really don't need to spend any real money to get a stick with a throttle.

not needed, just tap "w" to hover. you'll find that the joystick is just an outlet for noobs who think it will make them better. reality is the best pilots will use M&K fine and wont need the liability of the controller not working right when needed, not set up properly (OMG the pilot DC and its not plugged in!) or having to switch. but i'm sure there are a few that like the more realistic feel or something.

would be nice to have a button on keyboard for adjustable throttle though... but that is just luxury.

Its amazing that they don't fit real aircraft with mouse and keyboard as the extra control and being able to hold that control for any length of time is obviously not necessary.

What a nice Joystick will make for you :

- Easier Landings

- Easier Turns

- Easier Engagements

- Easier Speed Control

- More simulation

What using a keyboard and mouse will make for you :

- Need to be pressing W multiple times when approaching to hold at 50% throttle

- Need to slide multiple times the mouse to still make a bad turn

- Harder engagements = You'll die most of the time

- Harder Speed Control

- Less simulation

I try to get a Joystick faster as I can.

Tbh, joystick is good if you want to fly with wingmen, then you can sinchronize speed and heading, but after flying for long enough you shouldn't have more problems with landing/turning (most jets)/bombing than if you would be using a joystick. Allthough I have to say that flying J10/Eurofighter with joystick/keyboard only is much better, because using those jets well with M&K well is nearly impossible.

hehe, was my first joystick, got it back in around 2002 and even then it was pretty old , still got it in the attic as a backup

gaming mouse makes it so i dont have to "slide" the mouse or lift it up. the only thing that is better with joystick is throttle and a joystick is more realistic. i'm sure i could fly great with both.

just today i saw a pilot crash because his "joystick wasn't centered" correctly... liability is a negative.

rhino if you look at some construction vids of people's simulation cockpits, they use keyboards all the time. they have so many switches and keys that they might as well have keyboards.

If your talking about choppers then mostly yes, jets on the other hand like what I'm talking about, noo

BTW everyone pretty much has a gaming mouse with a high DPI these days, its nothing special.

I don't fully understand what your on about?

Are you talking about people making home made cockpits?

I personally am not that much into flying and my x52 has enough buttons on it to handle BF2 and all the key buttons of most flight sims but yes, I occupationally reach out to my keyboard in front for an uncommon key like, if we are talking PR here one of the mumble squad radio keys, or if we are talking a flight sim then something like cockpit lights on/off etc but generally, even when flying complicated flight sims, I hardly ever take my hands off the stick and throttle when flying like a Pilot in r/l, only time you really touch the k/b is non-combat situations, like a pilot in r/l other than with controls within the cockpit.

I personally don't have my own make shift cockpit because its not worth the space/money

But a good joystick on the other hand, hell even a basic cheap one is well, well worth it and you can even get a pretty good stick for less than most gaming mice today

I just realized with that example I gave above, you can't even do that with a mouse and k/b combination, as if you take your hand off the throttle (ie, W key) while flying a jet to push a numpad key to talk to another squad, you will loose a serious amount of power, perhaps crash if you talk for any period of time while with a stick with throttle, your throttle is set leaving your left hand free

what i mean for liability is that its an extra peripheral that could be messed up... you would know if you had a faulty mouse because you use it for everything

i fly jets with M&K, the high dpi makes it so i dont have to move the mouse much. and dogfights in PR never last long. you can use outrageous amounts of dpi and aim with aa still too lol.

so i figure a joystick is a waste of money, but if somebody wants to send me a joystick for free i'll gladly try it

you can take your hand off keyboard with jet and heli for a good amount of time... but with heli you will slowly lose altitude and jet you will lose speed.

Anyways since this suggestion has just turned into a Joystick vs Mouse debate and the orignal suggestion dismissed I'm going to lock this topic.
